Default !AIR guys that have cats come in!!!

the people that have done the AIR deletion who have cats may wanna think about reinstalling their AIR system. i asked my man Jeff at CAM in durham NC, he installed my headers and tuned the PCM, and i asked him about taking my AIR system. He advised me NOT to do it since i have cats. By taking out the AIR system you will kill the cats and have to replace them. so just thought id let ppl know about this!!!

People keep saying that. I'd say can be debated.

if thats true. explain it to me....

from what i know. the AIR is only used to PRE-HEAT the cats on cold starts. thats it.
it helps the cats work better.

id say the worst thing that would happen is that it will take longer for the cats to heat up there for you will pollute more after starts.

thats it!

The AIR system helps light off the cats quicker on cold start. If it was necessary to keep the cats alive, the AIR system would run all the time. Notice it only come on during cold start.

No "specialist" is going to convince me to weld air tubes on my nice clean headers and run all those freaking hoses back under the hood. No way. It might kill the stock cats but don't think the aftermarket performance cats have a problem without it. I've always heard since the cats are so far back now with headers, the AIR system doesn't really do a lot anymore anyway. What cats did he install on your car?

Deleting the AIR system may reduce the life span, but it aint going to up and kill them. Running rich (startup) may over-saturate the catalyst, but should burn most of it off once they light off.

Turning off COT (cat over temp protection) and a bad tune are more likely to effect the lifespan.

When I installed my Z06 intake..(it was the first mod)..I got rid of all of the smog stuff (AIR & EGR) and put plates over the holes on the exhaust. I ran it like that for about 50,000 miles without any problems..had an LS1 edit to make the SES lite go away..car ran great and got great gas milage during that time..didn't bother the cats at all...I don't see any problems with you getting rid of all that dead weight and clutter under the hood..it cleans things up a little too...you might need to consult with another "expert"...

PS Find out how long he has had his "expert license"...he may need to get it renewed...

I agree with the above. air isn't gonna hurt your performance any, reason most people do it is to just clean up the look under the hood.

well like we all said. you will be fine.

if air and egr were SO IMPORTANT they would not have stopped putting them on in 2001....

so if your expert is correct, than a 2002 SS's cats will not last long because there isnt air injected into the exhaust manafold?

Question

I thought '01 and newer F-Bodies still had Air but didn't have EGR because of the different cam design?

Most mechanics are retards. Which is why I do all my own work. I can't recall ever meeting a regular auto mechanic that new as much as I do about cars, and it is just a hobby for me.

01 and 02 still have AIR, just no EGR. from waht i have heard from someone who i trust, AIR is something to make it look like the car has better emmisions at startup before the cats start working for emmisions testing

So true ... Sometimes I think mechanics know less about cars then the average "car guy" knows. They might know how to fix stuff, but the knowledge ends there. Not to mention 90% of them are still stuck in the 60's, and refuse to learn the new technology.
