Default Exhaust Vibration (ORY related)

Today I went and had a local exhaust shop fab up a mount to the y-pipe to make it more sturdy because it had been slapping my floorboard. They welded a bolt onto the crossmember and bolted a hanger onto it. Now the exhaust wont budge much at all but it is causing a lot of vibration in the car. He used two sidepost rubber terminals to absorb the vibration but they definitely aren't doing the job. I belive it is because they actually have metal in the middle and are just surrounded by rubber. Any idea on what kind of rubber thing I can put in it's place to make the vibration stop?

Sounds like you need the type of hangar that has rubber in the middle, with a flat piece of steel welded to the Y that slides in between the rubber pieces. Like the one on the pass side rear. Or just glue/rivet some good heater hose or similar to the floor pan.

Yea, I figured I needed a rubber mount. I just hate to go back to that exhaust shop for the 3rd or 4th time in a week. I wonder if I can just find some rubber washers or something to put around the bolt where it bolts up to the crossmember.

People who say violence never solves anything,
have never hung their own F-body y-pipe.

You want to settle down the rolling over of the
motor on its mounts, and you want to hang the
pipe with enough clearance for what remains.

If you put poly motor mounts (or solid depending
on your interest) then the pipe will not roll up as
much. If you shim the pipe back from every single
point of interference and then snug it up from the
lowest point then you will be tight but not buzz.
But this may leave you with too low a ground
clearance. To get that better you would probably
want to strategically persuade the top side of the
pipe wherever you find scuff marks from this
banging with a 5lb hammer sort of argument. If
you work the clearance smoothly then it won't
bother flow really (a 1/2" dimple on 3" pipe here
and there, ain't much).

I believe if you have a motor that likes to roll
over on soft mounts and you dog down the
Y-pipe far from centerline you are going to put
an uncalled-for back-torque on the exhaust,
might expect this to at least aggravate leaks.

If you have ramps, a floor jack and a bunch of
shim wood you can at least try the rehanging.
That will get you in the mood for da
before too many tries.
