Default Ligenfelter intake manifold

Well I thought for 250.00 I was getting a hell of a deal
and that I would see an increase in performance over
my LS-1 intake.
Something isn't right. My car has slowed down .3 and
I've lost 2 to 2-1/2 mph. The alum intake has not been ported
and someone at the track said he heard that it flowed less
than the LS-1 intake.
I've got HPTuners coming this week (I hope) and maybe it can
tell me if there is a leak or I just plane need a tune.
My wife isn't going to let me spend anymore money on the
car this year so if I have to I'll put the LS-1 intake back on.
I'm just not happy, I had high hopes when I installed the intake.

It's most likly from heat soak, you should have just got an LS6 and called it a day.

flows cfm for cfm what an ls6 intake does, weighs more, and has heat soak potential.

I dont understand the market for these pieces. Unless you just want more bling.

The advertisment plainly says its a LS6 style intake but made from aluminum. You are paying for looks.

Well, I didn't pay anything for looks at 250. and I haven't seen
an LS-6 intake for that cheap and that is why I bought it.
I figured I could ice it down just like the LT-1 guys.
But there was no noticable increase in power like I was expecting
with my mods.
I've also been throwing a MAP code since the install. Is that
a sign of an air leak? I've got HPTuners coming in a few days
maybe some tuning will help? I'm about ready to put my LS-1
intake back on.

probably a stupid question but did you re-check all your connections, make sure all your sensors are plugged back in ?
You could put the LS1 intake back on and if the car goes back to the way it was then you'll know for sure it was the intake. If you could sell it for what you paid or close save that money towards an LS6 intake for next year.

Vacuum leak? Back track your install procedure...something isn't right, but its not the intake. For the know-it-alls ...heat soak is a joke. You're not going to lose 3 tenths and 2 mph in a quater switching intake materials. If that were the case, they wouldn't be selling them. That intake is same as the LS6 with the flexibility of porting, a direct port option for the funny gas crowd and yes, bling potential if polished.

I would bet you have a leak around your intake ports, and recheck ALL connections.

Heard that...... heat soak this, heat soak that. Show me a NASCAR/ Pro stock/ Pro Mod/ Sprint Car ect. with a plastic manifold and Ill shut up. Plastic manifolds do run cooler but realistically are far cheaper to produce. Cant remember the last time I saw a "Fabricated Sheet Plastic" manifold either. In the old days we would spray a little ether around the intake a listen for the motors idle change looking for leaks.

The reason why heatsoak is more of a problem with these cars versus the ones you mentioned is because they are all carburated. F.I. cars don't have the benefit of the natural cooling process of fuel vaporizing in the carb venturi. Also, after talking from our FAST rep, the reason plastic intakes aren't more popular in the aftermarket is because of the high tooling costs associated with creating them. It still all comes down to physics though. I can hot lap my car 6-8 times at the track with a composite intake with NO loss in performance. Try that with an LT1. I also picked up 22 RWHP going from an LS6/stock ported TB to FAST 90/NW 90 setup with NO other changes. Talk about bang for the buck. 481 HP 423 TQ.

I don't disagree with most of the arguments with the exception that Aluminum manifolds being a total detriment like I have read so many times. Most people on any forum are just repeating what they have heard so I take it all with a grain of salt anyway. I have referred to this car before because it is so ridiculous fast and does have an aluminum intake.

A car that suffers from heatsoak can be fast, just not consistently. Dyno's have shown that power drops off after a couple of pulls with the aluminum intakes.

So true. This topic of aluminum intakes and heat soak power loss come around every so often. Where's one of our resident ME's to show how much heat would actually have to be transferred to the incoming intake charge to lose enough hp to drop a tenth or a couple mph?

Like I said, "A little ether". Weiand manifolds have a conventional paper gasket.

How about some discussion on this - I still haven't seen anything proven on this, even after all the hot air that's been exchanged here on the board, haha.

For the sake of argument, let's say air moving at >3000RPM through the intake was heated 10 degrees, from TB to cylinder - while moving at 600+feet per second, with most of it not making contact with the intake itself. (That temp increase is probably stretching it bigtime, in reality I'd guess it to be closer to 3-5 degrees F, or maybe even a negligable change in temp ?).

How much horsepower is lost in a 10 degree IAT change ? What about the (probably) more realistic 3-5 degrees ?

It's a given that cooler air = more HP due to the higher concentration of O2 in the mixture, but I don't think the air is in the intake long enough to be heated to the point of costing a large amount of hp.

It's pretty clear that there's a 0hp loss with a composite intake where there is SOME as-yet unmeasured loss with a heat-soaked aluminum intake - so the decision should be a no-brainer... However I don't think the losses are as big as people make them out to be... Practically every car on the road besides the LS1 has a iron or aluminum intake.

My 20 something year old son and his friends believe everything they read in the magazine ads. I have seen them calculate HP from the claims of the products. A few bolt ons like 20 hp headers and 15 hp cat back, 10 hp water pump..... next thing you know you have a 2500 Hp basically stock motor. Apparently I don't know **** because I don't know what a VTek is. You can discuss this all day but the LS1 ads are plastic.... How bout' plastic heads....
