Default lights dim and flicker

So, the other day I started my car and after a a couple of miles I turned my lights on and my voltage read about 8 or 9 volts. Then after driving a few more miles it jumped all the way to a little below the 15 mark. The lights would flicker during driving so I figured battery or alternator. Battery was just about deceased and the alternator was on its way out. So I got a new battery at Midas (cause I was there for the checking of the alt.) and then got a new alternator at Autozone.(Duralast Gold) It seemed to run fine, lights didn't flicker when driving but now at idle the volts are a little past 13 and the interior lights dim. Any ideas why this is occuring? I read another thread about a voltage regulator but don't know where or what that is. My car idles at about 550 rpm's warm with my A4.
