Default continual o2 sensor problem (multiple within two weeks)

I have a 99 SS, and I bought it w/ a check engine light on, scanned it got p1152 p1153, both front o2s, went to checkers bought two sensors slapped em on... two weeks later, P1153 pops up again, I go under the car, take it off put it back on. clear the code, two days later, check engine again.

I'm thinkin i might have gottena faulty o2 sensor from Checkers, but am unsure....

Could something be causing new O2 sensors to get fried on my car?

any tips?

can I drive my car w/o an o2 sensor so i can take off the new one n return it for a newer one?

First, are you running stock exhaust?

If you have long tubes, try the rear O2's off of a vette. I had the same prob code, clear and new O2's and 30 miles later same code. I bought Bosch 13111 O2's and put em on and they work great. The Bosch work good with the lower temps, and switch wicked quick.

GIve that a try.

I was getting insufficient switching from both of my stock O2's on extentions, so I got a set of the Denso's and about a week later the code came back... So I just turned the code off and havnt had a problem since

I dont think turning off the code is a good idea.Especially something as important as your front o2's.It would seem that something is throwing off the o2's,like running to rich causing them to foul and not switch fast enough.

If you daily drive your car alot I'd try to find out what is causing the problem.Rather than turning off the code and ignoring the problem.

Maybe you should post in the pcm forum and ask about insufficient swithching for the o2's.I'm not an expert on how they work but I had the same problem as well.I switched to the Vette rears about a year ago and haven't had the problem since.

My stockers with 24" extentions kept giving me that code, but with no ill effects. The new ones too now. I still got 20 mpg city and 28 mpg on the highway. On my LC-1 I have logged my AFR in closed loop and it is +/- .25 of 14.68... so in my situation I dont think that it is anything to be overly concerned with.

Guys, same problem strikes again, it was about a month ago that i replaced my pasenger side front O2 sensor, and now it has thrown the p1153 code again..

Any suggestions?

Will running it now kill fuel mileage?

Get a true GM F-Body front O2 sensor, the C5 rear senosrs switch a tad slower. I have seen this a few times now with some local cars.

a leak in your exhaust will make your o2 go out all the time. I would double check all of the bolts and look for leaks.

check for exposed wires on your extensions and o2's.

So, pretty much my choices are to replace the sensor, and check for exhaust leaks or to delete the code, or run it w/ the SES all the time.

On the side: Is it bad to drive the car as it stands? seems to run fine, and I actually am getting better gas mileage than what I was before the sensor went out... strange I must say.

Any recommendations on the best way to look for leaks, or how do I adjust A/F ratio?

Also, the car is bone stock cept fora MTI Lid and some brake upgrades.

You may have clogged cats. That will kill an o2 sensor pretty fast and rob power as well. As long as you don't have any leaks or bad wire connection to your o2's, this is normally the culprit for this kind of thing. How many miles does your car have anyway?

81k miles, so , if cats were clogged that be another reason? and if so, would that throw a code?

Would eliminating my cats cause a loss in performance and/or fuel economy?

yup never thought of cats. that is a probable choice. a ses code for 02 make your car run in limp mode which dumps fuel, you should be getting horrible gas mileage. by deleting the cats you will pick up some power and not tell the difference in gas mileage.

I vote for deleting the cats and the o2's as they are both a pin in the ***

If the cats were clogged you would definitly have more problems the just an ses light. Your car would be running like crap.

Not if they are in the beginning stages. I have had a couple through the shop in the last few years. Not just f-bodies but c series trucks. It is choking the exhaust flow and the o2 will not be able to switch. It will swing way one way or the other.

I thinking this would be the right place to post. I bought my car with o2 sims in place. SES light has always been on. The dealership said it was because the sims weren't in place....f'n liars. So I had already bought new sims, and when I went to install them, I see that they are already there. I replaced them anyway thinking that the old ones might be fried. I still have the SES light on. I had it scanned my autozone and they said it was an o2. So it must be the front o2s then right? What are the best o2s to get that will last?

Helms does list an exhaust leak as possible problem....
but it would pretty much have to be upstream of the
O2s, I'm thinking. With stock exhaust that's prob
not too likely.
Possible intermittent wiring short somewhere between
the O2 sensor and the pcm.
If the cats were clogging you should be pulling codes
for that.....
Just for S&Gs I would pull the O2 connectors and spray
them good with electronics cleaner (non oily type).
Might disconnect the battery and pull the pcm connectors
and make sure there's no crud/corrosion on the terminals.
If the problem existed when you bought it and you
replaced the O2s I would definitely be looking at
wiring/connections. My .02, anyway. HTH.
