i'll attest to that, i did 6 of my 8 ls1 plugs today, leaving the passenger side closest to the firewall...

but i'll take off the coil pack when i do those last two...

lt1... now thats a pita... ramps dont help... i can do them now in probably 45 minutes but the first time... like 8 hours...

for me today if i stayed working instead of goofing off i could have spent probably 45 minutes on the 6 that i did... but i ate breakfast and watched some tv... posted some messages... so it toook me like 4 hours including an oil change

I hear about everybody getting #8 from the bottom. I couldnt get a drinking straw near #8 from the bottom with my headers. I can get em all now in 45 min. Like everybody says, remove the AIR's and the coils from the right side, and its cake. Hint, the battery makes a nice place to kneel on while getting #8. also a 1/4 in drive wrachet helps a ton too.

When you get the plugs in you think you're home free, but ya still gotta put the wires on.

Ditto!! On 98's, #8 from the top. I could not even get a socket on it from the bottom. Barely see it!!

Stop bitching!! It takes 3 hours on a Stealth or 3000-gt because you have to pull the intake plenum off to get to the last 3 plugs and thats after you know what comes off to get to them. I am damn glad I am done with that car.

There's a lot of things that simple experience helps with on LS1's In the beginning I did quite a few things "the hard way" or took forever to do. Now days, I already have all the tools I'll need for a certain job in my hand before I even start. Many things that seem difficult, can be done in literally minutes.

Is there anything you guys would like a detailed guide for? I'm sure we could get some of our more experienced staff/members/sponsors to write them up if they'll help our folks.

I guess I'm part of the club who spent a few hours changing plugs. Save for the the back 2 coil packs on the passenger side, I left the rest of the packs on... Now that I have LT's and !EGR and !AIR it shouldn't be too bad. The real PITA job on these cars is the motor mounts. I haven't done it before/yet, but that's one job I am not looking forward to if I have to change them with the motor in the car. Who knows, if the mounts get really bad, I may just hurry up on building a forged motor and change mounts during a motor swap.

I agree plug install was a bitch and I nearly cut
off the tip of my pinky finger. I did not remove the coil
packs because that would have made a miserable job worse
I couldn't get my hands in there.

Y'all don't feel bad... it took me three hours to get the driver side, and four to get the passenger side plugs. But I have fat fingers and Popeye-type forearms, too.

I'm a member of the club, myself. Took care of the driver side in a few hours(stock plugs at 99k miles, they were damn near forged into the head) and had to get my friend, who is skinny as all hell, to get #6 and #8. This was with stock manifolds, removing rear coil packs on pass. side, and using a socket with a 1" extention. Took a little bit but got it out. Puttin' that plug wire back on was a bitch, too.

I did my long tubes and couldn't BELIEVE how much easier they are to get to now. I can damn near slap my whole hand on the #8 from the bottom hahaha.

That's a true statement! Think an LS1 sucks.... trying to work on an LT1. That is WHY I sold the LT1 and have an LS1 now!!

I searched for lessons learned before I tackled my plugs. That helped a great deal.

I think the two most important things I found were 1) removing the coils on the passenger side and 2) coming at the #8 plug from the top with my right hand while laying over the engine. I didn't have any trouble with the bolts on the coil packs and replaced them all.

The first time I did mine it took the better part of 6 hours. The last time I did them in about an hour. The big differences? Experience and a 10mm gear wrench to remove the passenger side coil packs.

Got my MSD wires in yesterday. Hell, I gave up on them after just changing out the drivers side wires. I destroyed 2 of the factory wires. Twisting didn't help at all. I may wait till I get my LT's to put the pass. side ones on, unless I can find someone with smaller hands to do it for me.

same here. my very first time swapping the plugs i was a mess. i still carry battle wounds from changing my plugs man.... i thought i was the only one..oh yeahh!! the second time i did it, it cost 1100 bucks, for stripping the treads heads on the driver side. so i promise myself not to touch them again..

I can change mine in 30mins. I have a million tools and that makes a difference. I find that the hardest part is putting the wire boot on passenger side plug #4. I change that side by jacking up the car and changing the plug from under the car.

If you want blood, then change the motor mounts.

So do you all take of the individual coil packs or the whole rail on the pass. side?
