Default Boy did I F&^% up.....

This afternoon I changed my spark plugs and spark plug wires myself, I actually thought that it would be a 30 to 60 minute job to swap these out....WRONG!!!

What a complete pain in the *** this was! I never realized that doing something that seemed so simple would be a complete bitch to do!

I've invented new cuss words just for this seemingly small task...at one point I ran out of english I was cussing so much, there was so much blood pouring out of the cuts on my hands my wife offered me a tampon.....I was climbing all over the top of that sob trying to find a way to get at number 8, I was under the car, on top of the motor, at one point I was thinking I might need to pull the motor to get at this damn thing!! I've met wholesome virgins whose pants were easier to get into than this...

An F bod owner is not truly an owner until you've done this in my opinion!

Pull the coil packs off and the air tubes and the plugs are a breeze. I can change them all in 1/2 hour or less...

on another note, how come so many people on here can change their plugs in 30 mins or less and do an intake swap in 30 mins, but if you go to an sponsor shop, they list the labor that it takes 2 hrs and they are professionals? am i missing something?

Plugs on the LT1s is easy if you stick the car on ramps. I did most of mine from the bottom. Routing the wires are a PITA though.

There is a book that is printed every year that shows the labor time for certain jobs. This is how mechanics charge the customers and give quotes. If it says 2 hrs and the mechanic can do it in 30 minutes, it's up to him as to what he wants to charge. Most charge the going hr rate because everyone has to make money and pay bills. This is why you learn to do things yourself.

LMFAO

My first plug change was a lot like what you described. These days the plug change takes me about 45 minutes and i can pull the motor in just under 3 hours - without a lift.

Patience grasshopper

GM has a book that list how long it takes to change out certain parts. Thats what they go by. For instance if you have long tubes with no EGR on them you can do plugs it 30 minutes or less especially on C5's. But the dealerships books figure it for a stock car and thats what they charge for. Thats why if you are faster at doing cetian stuff on cars than you make more money. You can get paid for 12 hours worth of work and do 8 and go home getting paid for the 12. I use to work for GM and thats how its done. Hope this helps.

Now ask how many people have at least one bolt permanently removed from their coilpack mounts! Use this experience as an excuse to get longtubes, makes plug changes much easier!

I will be doing that as well, I have LT's and all the bolt on's, never needed to change my plugs/wires before, but now I will leave the back one or two off and just remove the coil packs when I do this again....

Damn, drinking beer and car repairs just do not go hand in hand sometimes.....

The bad thing is that they could care less if they do it right, they just want to do it fast.

They'll find any shortcut they can.

I won't let anyone work on my car for anything major that I don't trust.

There's a sign up at the only shop in town I'll go to. It reads:

CHEAP
FAST
GOOD

Choose two.

I found it pretty easy to swap plugs on my '00 car once the coil rail was off and the AIR pipe out of the way. But on my '98 it seemed like too much work to pull the back coil since they are individually mounted on the valvecover rather than a rail, so I just worked around it. It is a pain in the ***, but it can be done and the best bet is to wear long sleeves taped to a work glove to keep your arms and hands from looking like you just got in a cat fight. For those guys with real skinny arms, this is a much easier job.

i dont understand why all you guys take the coil packs off, just remove the AIR lines and 1-7 come out the top, 8 from the bottom, down in 45 minutes or less, i took my time doing mine wasnt going for any speed record but i bet i could pop them out in a half hour
