Yep, just tell um that's the way you got it and you had no clue. Playin gdumb works 9 times out of ten. I personally don't worry about it. The cops around here are lucky to know what a cat is, much less go looking for it.

"You can make out some red subframe connectors, and a clamp holding the I pipe to the Y pipe.

It hits everything but the lottery "

Thats no lie.

Chill out, was trying to add some comedy to the thread.

The fact of the matter is, that no cop really gives a ticket for this. Usually a excessively loud exhaust, or modified exhaust, etc.

Unless you REALLY **** off a state trooper, your all set. Most city cops are too stupid to know anything about it.

A state trooper, can technically pull your inspecttion sticker, and give you the appropriate tickets.

The original question was what is the "worst" that could happen. The worst that could happen is a $2,500 fine per cat. Whether the officer will choose to punish you like this is irrelevant. Actually the worst thing that could happen is they could tow your car and sell it at an auction. This probably wouldn't happen, but could. I guess that would have to be the worst thing that "could" happen.

Or around the Indy area either. In fact, I don't know of one of my Fbody buddies that has them.

As an officer once told a buddy of mine "Ignorance of the law is no excuse."

Although you are right, most officers can care less about whether you've got cats or not. If one of them knows what he's looking for, and wants to pull out his field mirror and inspect your car - in some area's he's got all the right to do so. Just depends on the area.

My friend got pulled over for having no cats. He had to go to court and the judge sentenced him to die by lethal injection. Thats probably the worst that can happen.

Just Kidding.

In this case I don't think it would be ignorance of the law. If you can prove you bought the car used, then how can they prove that you were even aware they were missing? That would not be ignorance of the law, just ignorance of what equpitment is underneath your car. Just play dumb, as if you were not a hobbiest and didn't know **** about cars, and just naturally assumed that the car had all necessary equpitment because you haven't failed any emissions tests with it. I don't think private citizens are required to be aware of every piece of emissions equiptment on their cars and whether it is intact or not. We might not be able to legally remove this stuff, but I don't know of any laws that require us to actually know if it is present or not at the time the car is purchased. So long as the car is up to date (passed) on any emissions/inspection tests, then you've done all that the law requires.

My guess is that if you went the "play dumb" route, worst case is you'd be forced to have some cats installed, but I doubt any fines and/or impoundment would be imposed.

Granted, this arguement would be much less likely to hold water if you bought the car new, since obviously the factory did not assemble the car that way. But if you bought it used, then unless your record shows a history of EPA violations I doubt you'd be facing anything serious....except maybe in CA. That state is and when it comes to EPA stuff.

i work for the courthouse, but then again im in florida, so basically if it moves its street legal. but in emission abiding states fines can reach and exceed $3000/ cat, and u can get in serious crap, due to the ozone layer bull####. just tell the cop u bought the car like that. if all else fails tell him if u can start it up and then just make a run for it, what do have to lose.

ps...im not payin ur ticket or bailin u out if u take my advice..do at own risk.

Yea, I think I'll just leave it on. I like the way it sounds and runs better now anyway.

I didn't think Indiana even had emissions laws. I grew up there and I agree with the others, this is probably the last thing you need to worry about there. Ditch the cats and make that LS1 scream! Gotta love no emissions states.
