Default De-screen MAF...worth it

And how do you do it? Do you just knock out the honeycomb screen from the air sensor side?

Do you need a new tune?

Leave it in there unless you are gonna spray a dry shot.

I'd leave it alone period. MAF is a very sensitive piece on these cars. Benifits of .5 hp are not going to outweigh the computer not getting the same readings it is used to having.

this is true, however, the screen is mainly there to help create laminar flow

I'd leave it in....I've also found small pieces of trash, etc. in mine. Its too sensitive of equipment and the gain is too low to take the risk.

if your car is tuned to be SD descreen it, only reason why its there is to protect the wires in the MAF.

just stab it with a screwdriver from the motor side and it pops right out.

if the car is in SD, there is no need for me maf at all so why ruin a perfectly good maf? an no the only reason the screen is there is not to protect the wires. although that is another purpose

I've been running a descreened MAF for 4 years without any problems. I ran a Granatelli MAF (doesn't have a screen) for 3 years, and put my stocker (descreened) back on about 1 year ago when I started spraying a dry shot. There's really no point in descreening it unless you are spraying a dry shot though.

I descreened mine. No ill effects. I just dyno'd this morning. 421 rwhp cam-only with a pulley, Shaner S3, and headers.

The truck maf sensors are calibratied with the screen because the airflow comes from an angle, so it has to be there for the correct ariflow angle.

The LSx cars however don't have the same calibration like the truck maf's. You can take out the car maf screen with no ill effects. Whether you want to or not is the question.

I found bugs stuck on my MAF screen before I took my screen out. My stocker lid was not sealed all the way so debris went through the box. I upgraded my stock lid to a MTI unit and made damn sure it will seal fully by adding weather strip around and under the MTI lid and then proceeded to descreen the MAF. Gains?:dunno: I did feel a better throttle response and a deeper exhaust note on my stock Z exhaust. Note: that's waay after I installed the MTI lid and K&N.
