hpp 160* thermo causes knock retard???

hpp 160* thermo causes knock retard??? someone mentioned this to me today at the track. didn't know what to think. but i just put one in yesterday, and i was getting a bit of knock retard the whole run down the track. it could be a few other things(exhaust rattling) but is there any truth in this?

The idea is to make the engine run cooler, that alone will clear up most KR (Detonation). I was getting just a little bit myself when the temps here in Florida hit in the 90's. I added a 160* and set the fans and now it is gone! I can take it from stop to 100+ with 0 KR now in 95* + weather! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Re: hpp 160* thermo causes knock retard??? i have it descreened but no porting job on it. what do i need for the top engine cleaner? i have 46k miles on the car now. so it is possible. thanks. and will doing that ruin the spark plugs? so should i order new ones? cause i JUST put these in with the headers. thanks again

You can run it through a vacume line or take out the plugs and pour it in there and let it sit. Try and do a search somewhere for better instructions on doing this.

FWIW
A few issues ago in GM High Tech in the tech column they mentioned KR caused by a cheap 160 stat. Seems the stat "fluttered" because it had (weak spring, it tended to stick or something like that) and this restricted water flow or something causing the car to run hotter. This was like 1-2 issues ago. In any case, replacing the cheap-o stat got rid of the KR in that case.
