Default lower air box question

This may be a stupid question but are the SSs supposed to have a bigger opening on the bottom (front) of the air box than the standard Z28 box?
On my 98 WS6 the opening was large enough to put 2 fingers into the opening but the box on my new SS I can barely fit one finger into the inlet.
I thought the ram air cars had a larger opening on the front of the lower part of the airbox.

SS's use the standard lower air box, like a Z28 or Trans-Am.

The WS6 gets the HUGE lower air box.

The Z28 / SS lower air box inlet slot is the
smallest cross sectional area of the fresh
air path, prior to the air filter. I tried
raising my box, but could only get 1/8" before
starting to hit the stock SS hood.

Tried sliding it back to gain some more height,
but it also functions as the radiator top
support, and the radiator started getting
loose. So no go, there.

I'm still curious about fitting the WS-6 lower
box to a stock SS. Has anyone done this and
been happy? Or is it impossible for height
reasons with the original SS hood? Can't see
how you could have a taller box, and keep the
air seal, and not bang the hood all at once.

I did it on my '01 Firehawk. Fit in with absolutely NO rubbing of the hood. I clayed it to make sure. Teh WS6 lower is relatively cheap and looks nice.

i have never heard of anyone fitting one on sucessfully.

i cut the 'lip' out of my stock lower airbox with a dremel, raised the opening .25 or so everywhere except for the latches.

Thanks guys, I think i just might seal the opening off and use the FTRA kit to get more air flow.

well.. it's now a straight shot from my de-baffled WS6 hood into the airbox... so I'd say it can't hurt <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
