Default TTS headers -> 1 7/8 steps, will it pick up?

Im at the 435rwhp range and rev to ~7000rpm. Assuming no backpressure (12" extensions), will the 1 7/8" steps with merge collectors pick up over my 1 3/4" TTS headers from 5800-7000rpm?

...then what about if I add backpressure (street trim)?

If I can pick up 8-10rwhp the swap will be worth it to me. If you've upgradded to the Dynatechs let me know what your results were!

JS are you running the merge collectors?

Merge collectors typically need to be tuned for the best results (like anything). They aren't really a bang-for-the-buck mod, but neither are sheetmetal intakes.

If you did the huge valved, LS6 headed, 7300+ rpm deal with a huge reverse split cam thing you were thinking about, I think the bigger steps would definently help.

Right now, dont know.

I went from MAC headers to Dynatech 1.75" headers w/3" collectors. I saw definite gains, but can't really say exactly how much due to too many variables. Maybe .1-.15 if I remember correctly.

As far as a stepped design, here's some interesting reading... Stepped Headers

Interesting article George, but Terry's question is almost "Is 1.75" too small?" not "are steps better?". There isn't a single diameter 1 7/8" header for LS1s currently on the market is there? I doubt Terry can find a set of the Whispers that fit that description. I think when you start winding these 346s into the upper rpms, running big stalls and cams, the 1 7/8 is going to make more power than the 1 3/4, and the best way to get a 1 7/8 these days is a Dynatech step.

Also notice in the article how they acted like 1000 is a lot for custom headers?

George why did you pick the 1 3/4" over the 1 7/8" step?

i was under the impression that Grot made a 1 7/8" long tube (not stepped).

1. When I bought the Dynatechs, the stepped header was not ready for production.

2. The article I quoted above... I didn't want to waste money if they weren't going to gain me anything (or simply lose power). However, I would try a 1 7/8" header in an instant. Groty made at least one batch of them (that I know of, ARE handled them). I don't think there are any others out there right now, though, unless you build them yourself...

That article only mentions two cars that had custom steps built for them, and neither worked as planned. The writer's very non-scientific arguments leave a lot of room for doubt about the amount of actual "theoretical exhaust theory" that really went in to the calculations he came up with for the tube lengths and stepped transitions for the headers he mentioned. Its going to take more than two cars we know nothing about to discourage me from trying some stepped headers (OK, they have been on the car for like 3 months now LOL).

I also don't think merges are going to show much of a gain in front of a Y-pipe, but then again I have mandrel-bent true duals with a 3" x-pipe...

GeorgeC, Headers By Ed is full of crap anyway....he recommends 1-5/8" LT's for an LS1....he is truly clueless. Take a look at cars in class racing...the fastest ones typically have stepped headers.

Terry....JUST DO IT ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!

Terry I have a pair of the Grot 1 7/8 on my h/c. I will try to make it MMS Dyno DAsy and we'll see what kind of power they make, of course I never had 1 3/4 on there though for comaparison.

I am thinking about stepping up to 1 7/8 headers also. Which is the better choice...the Grotts or the Dynatechs?

I may just try out a set of Dynatech stepped headers for myself, along with a 3.5" collector <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

I didn't mean to quote the Headers by Ed article as gospel, just interesting reading...

I hear ya George!

Look at it this way Terry, show me one typical high HP 1st gen SBC that switched from 1-3/4" primaries to 1-7/8" that lost power on the dyno or MPH at the track......answer....NONE!

I ordered the headers today. Went with the 1 7/8 stepped and the 3.5" collector. I'll post before and after dyno numbers if I don't get a cam first.
