Default Does FTRA really work?

I have read all the testimonials, posts, track results, etc. that seem to indicate that the FTRA setup is worth at least 1-2 tenths and 2-3 MPH in the quarter. However, at least three well known LS1 "experts" have told me otherwise- that FTRA shows no gains at the track or dyno (which we already knew) over the FRA mod. I will not post their names- they may not want to be quoted publicly on this. I will say this much- one is a well-respected installer, one is a well-respected tuner, and the third is a well-respected engine builder/head porter. Opinions? Wizkid has some fairly convincing data on his website that indicates that FTRA does increase VE as well as showing gains in the 1/8 in ET and MPH. What do you guys think?

Let's see some before and after track results. What I'd really like to see is a before and after test comparing the FTRA to the FRA. There are two drawbacks to the FTRA that I see- it blocks the airflow to the radiator causing the engine to run hotter, and it is pulling the air directly off the pavement- which in hot conditions may be hotter air than ambient temperatures.

I believe it works. I can't see the kit showing any improvement over the FRA on the DYNO.

I have talked to someone that has a lot of respect in the GM world that doesn't believe in it either. They claimed to have tested it with zero gain. I am sure there are some people that can bolt on a heads/cam package and loose 3 thenths too.

If you don't seal the kit off COMPLETELY, it won't work. That's pretty much the bottom line. I picked up at the track and in the number testing I did. The numbers did it for me because I know I did my test accurately and as honest as I could. The track results helped a tad too.

Eric

That's my $0.02

I gained 3 rwhp with nothing more than a small fan blowing at the front of the car. Airbox completely un-sealed.

I'm a believer in MORE air is better Which is why I currently run a Whisper Ram Air, WS6 lower air box with a WS6 hood with all the baffles removed.

Bad SS,

I'm going to be doing air consumption tests on my car stock, with FRA, and with FTRA in about 2 months if you can wait that long. I'll be publishing the results on my web site.

I can assure you that I have no ties to Fast Toys at all, and my test will be scientifically valid.

I was a bit skeptical when I bought the kit. After installing it I felt a noticable increase in throttle response over 3K and the continues to pull harder over that rev than prior to having the kit.....the key is copletely sealing the system. It comes with a rubber type hose to help seal the original inatke area. Dump it and get some black 100mph tape and seal it TIGHT!

Steve- your test sounds like what I am looking for- a direct comparison between the FTRA and FRA. Question- how does one do an "air consumption" test? What data are you collecting?
Thanks.

NataSS Inc.- Where did you get that 100 MPH tape you talked about? I do have the FTRA already on my car, but have my doubts about how well sealed it is.

With FTRA, and lid and filter I went from 13.7 @ 105 to 13.2 @ 109. It can't hurt!
