Default Ported MAF ?

I am considering porting my MAF. Is it worth it or should I just by the ends? Time I have...money is another subject. If I decide to do this, will it throw any codes or make the car run too lean?
Is autotap necessary for this mod?

I heard it will make you run lean in some cases, but i'm not exactly sure. I haven't heard that you need autotap. I started doing it, i did one end, but had trouble with getting the other end out of the stock lid, so i am leaving it for another day. I cut most of the black aluminum part that is on the actual MAF and it hasn't thrown a code.

On a side note, have you removed your MAF screen (i think it says you did in your sig), if so are you having any problems. I'm afraid to, b/c when i looked at the screen on mine i found a piece or 2 of debris.

ya, i removed the screen. i went from 273 to i think 292 hp immediately on the dyno. i was shocked. my car must have been sooo rich or something.

i've had no problems with the descreened MAF. I just had the MAF off today actually to put on my MTI lid and Fernco tube. Came off really easily.

Exactly what black part on the MAF Sensor do I need to cut. I checked out installuniversity.com
but it wasn't clear to me. I don't want to mess with the wires in there.

It's been reported by some people that porting the MAF , -which will cause a lower load reported to the pcm - might result in a lower line pressure in the tranny on A4 cars, which might cause some trans problems at some point. The up side is that a lower reported load could result in a little more advanced timing. I would still want to monitor w/ ATAP or similiar to make sure it's not going too lean.

You're gonna be lean.

You will most definitely need the following:

a diagnostic tool eg. Autotap, Scanmaster, etc.
Mass Air-Flow Translator.

Mine are ported and I love 'em. Haven't had any problems <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Thanks for the advice. I've decided not to do it since I have no means to tune it with autotap or anything else.

How does the MAFT work in terms of leveling out the car when you port the MAF? is it automatic adjustment or do you have to program it?

Also, if it requires you to reprogram it, do you have to reprogram it every time you make an adjustment to the breathing? (i.e. whisper lid, smooth bellows, ported TB, etc)?
