Default First Impressions: SCC Raptor Ram Air v/s Stock and Lid

I recieved my functional ram air kit today, before this I had a Direct Flo for comparisons sake. Onto the SCC kit. Besides the lack of instructions and an overall "flimsy" kit, it didn't want to fit. I need to get a Fernco or Baker hose because that stock accordian piece is completely compressed. I got everything on after some squeezing but I didn't put on the huge foam seal to the underside of the hood because I didn't have any double-stick tape. There is also a hole which was too small for the IAT gasket and sensor and I had to stretch it out a little, and there as a hole on the passenger's side and the kit came with a plug. Unfortunately the plug didn't fit. So what did I do about this huge hole, well you know what they say. "If you can duck it, f* it." Yup, I duct taped up that thing Gotta love the quality of this, LoL. Anyays, I took a trip to WalMart for the double side tape and a first driving impression. I was disappointed TO SAY THE LEAST. Bottom line was the kit wasn't making any power. The only thing it did was make throttle response a little snappier. It was noticably slower than stock especially in first gear. It finally started making power around 75mph but it still wasn't anything like having a lid, maybe even with stock. Well I got my double stick and slapped that seal on and took the car up to the car wash (hand washed with Zaino, just used their sprayer for water cause it's quicker and I wanted to drive). On the way home I really got on it for the first time after a complete and total seal and was floored by the performance. I didn't expect a damn thing but being perfectly honest, it pulls quite a bit harder than a lid does.

The lid still owns it from take-off and the low end on first but by around 4500 RPMs in first the ram air kit has made up the loss and by 50000 RPMs it's got a lid hands down IMO. I wasn't expecting any gain so I don't feel like my butt-dyno isn't calibrated and I'm looking for power that isn't there. I honestly wasn't expecting much if anything. But I tell you once the car shifts to second, or if I punch it from a 25-40 roll, the car just squats and hauls ***. I'm very impressed. Anyways, I'm pretty impressed with the kit and it also makes the engine louder, I wasn't expecting that either. Now I have a really mean *** snarl in front and behind me, it used to only be behind me (gotta love the cutout, and the OG "Dynomouth" catback using the stock catback, a Zed style cutout and a bullet in the I-Pipe). Oh and when I hit it from a low roll right before the engine starts to get loud I can hear it literally sucking air in. It's awesome. I'm pretty happy with it and I think it was a great purchase especially since Suncoast cut me a deal after screwing me over on the hood. BTW: The Raptor hood finally did get on but is going to have to be repaired or replaced because of about 7 clusters of air pockets that rose up because the SCC idiots can't make a proper hood. Anyways, back to the kit. If nothing else, it makes the engine bay look badass Much better than a lid in the looks department too IMO. Now I just need to clean the rest of my engine bay, polish some stuff up, get FRCs and a battery cover, and I'll be set. Just thought I'd let everyone know. Later guys.

Default Re: First Impressions: SCC Raptor Ram Air v/s Stock and Lid

I would send that POS setup back to Suncoast immediately. I've seen numerous dyno tests of Suncoast's induction kit vs. a lid and filter, and the lid (no matter the brand) made 10-12 RWHP more than the SCC setup. They give you this HUGE filter, but look at the opening that it has to enter to go into the MAF! It's very narrow, and their kit is a total waste. I ended up buying a WS-6 lower airbox and lid for my Raptor hood that was on my '98 T/A, and it worked GREAT. Be sure to "modify" the baffles in the hood. I cut mine out and bought a piece of plexiglass that was held in place with two bolts and wingnuts. If the weather looked bad I'd put the plate in. If not, I'd have a true ram air system.
