Default Penultimate Exhaust Setup - Need help

Since I'm waiting around for a bunch of parts to come in, I'd like to redo my exhaust system.

Here is what I want to do:

Dynatech 1 7/8" step headers, 3" "merge" collectors, 2 bolt flange to a 3" mandrel ypipe, 3->3.5" flowmaster collector, 3.5" Ipipe, large 3.5" dynomax super turbo muffler, 3.5" turndown.

I want something quiet that has good flow, and something that is easy to take apart at the track to run !catback.

The problem is I don't know where to find 3" 2-bolt flanges (the ball type), and where to find the 3.5" Ipipe.

Also I need help understanding how merge collectors work so I can come up with a good guess as to what size I need. I understand they only help when I'm running open headers, but they aren't any worse than a std. collector when running a muffler right?

PS. Of course the ultimate exhaust setup is open collectors with short extensions.

Have somebody customize the I-pipe for you. That might be your best choice.

Looks like a nice setup

John is the ID of the ball flanges 3"? Where did you buy them from?

I really want this to be my last exhaust system, and those ball flanges will make it a lot easier to drop the ypipe.

Thanks!

I get my 2 bolt flanges (3") from the local mufler shop. I believe they come off a Chevy or Ford truck.

You should like the 3 to 3.5. But they also make a 3 to 4" and I believe a 3 to 5". For that you could throw a bullet mufler on there, or even quieter & got with the Dynomax you mentioned, which I believe is available in a 4".

have the end splayed out so it is a slip fit, and attach with a band clamp on one end, and a standard hanger connecting the back. Then you could easily drop it at the track, or before. Good luck..

Terry, SLP also sells 2-bolt ball flanges. Their p/n for 3" is 30113. This is just the flange itself, though - no tubing and no fasteners.

There is a big exhaust shop near me.

The 3" stuff was fished out of the dumpster, take off GM flanges, take a look at Silverado stock exhaust.

Terry, I don't understand where and why you are using 3" pipe and what is an "I" pipe? Are you talking about an "H" pipe? If so you should use and "X" pipe instead and also have the merge collectors neck down to 2-3/4" and then flare up to 3-1/2" and run 3-1/2" pipe back to your "X" pipe and mufflers.

Terry, try Eddie at major muffler in west La, he is just over the hill from you and does outstanding custom work. The flanges you are looking for are standard big block chevy truck items. He can get 3.5" pipe and anything else you may need.

LOL Terry, you're someone just like me who wants his "Frankenstein" exhaust. Everything looks good but of course I'm going to sway you to the full 1 7/8" primaries, I know Nick from ARE may still have a couple of sets. Whisper I think also made 1 7'8 headers but I don't think they do anymore, maybe you could get them of the Colonel . Plus the Dynatechs have slip on collectors which I've heard leak and they have no emissions hookups either. Other than that everything looks good.

I think you are nuts

Just run the 3 inch exhaust and drop it at the track. You are just wasting your money. At your power level 3.5 inch exhaust will not gain you anything except noise.

I find the dynomax ultra flow 3 inch muffler flows awesome and is quiet.

I ran 127mph through the full 3 inch exhaust before with no cutout. What is the point of spending that money and adding that weight when you are dropping the backhalf of the exhaust at the track anyways?
Cheers,
Chris

ps- I am not convinced the stepped headers are any better than MAC's either in your application.

A 422 dynoed 500+RWHP through the STOCK MACs and STOCK MAC ORY. I am sure your car will see next to nothing from the stepped headers and you will spend a shitload of coin to boot.

Got mine for $850, those are just the headers fully coated. But it was on a GP so it may be a little more around $900 for them.

Chris I hear what you're saying. The only reason I'm considering a change is because I can sell my current exhaust to offset the cost. I like to run open exhaust at the track but it would be fun to be quicker through a muffler too.

Terry, consider a 3" true dual X-pipe setup, that way you wouldnt have to run open header to benefit from a merge collector. Pics of your penultimate exhaust in my sig.

I'd love a dual setup, but I really want a very quiet exhaust. My car sounds like stock right now with the 229 cam, and I love it! When I race through the muffler I lose about .15ths, but the car is a total sleeper.

After my recent great dyno numbers (446rwhp/404rwtq) with my current setup, and hearing of people not gaining with dynatechs, I decided to do nothing to my exhaust.

I'll move that money over to the trailer fund.

If you want more flow and noise at the track why not simply add a cut out to your existing y-pipe now? I'd rather spend $55 and $40 to have it welded in? Also it will be alot quieter on the street, I had a 13.3-1 small block with 3 1/2" duel exhaust and it was insane open header.
