Penultimate Exhaust Setup - Need help
Here is what I want to do:
Dynatech 1 7/8" step headers, 3" "merge" collectors, 2 bolt flange to a 3" mandrel ypipe, 3->3.5" flowmaster collector, 3.5" Ipipe, large 3.5" dynomax super turbo muffler, 3.5" turndown.
I want something quiet that has good flow, and something that is easy to take apart at the track to run !catback.
The problem is I don't know where to find 3" 2-bolt flanges (the ball type), and where to find the 3.5" Ipipe.
Also I need help understanding how merge collectors work so I can come up with a good guess as to what size I need. I understand they only help when I'm running open headers, but they aren't any worse than a std. collector when running a muffler right?
PS. Of course the ultimate exhaust setup is open collectors with short extensions. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
Looks like a nice setup <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
I really want this to be my last exhaust system, and those ball flanges will make it a lot easier to drop the ypipe.
Thanks!
You should like the 3 to 3.5. But they also make a 3 to 4" and I believe a 3 to 5". For that you could throw a bullet mufler on there, or even quieter & got with the Dynomax you mentioned, which I believe is available in a 4".
have the end splayed out so it is a slip fit, and attach with a band clamp on one end, and a standard hanger connecting the back. Then you could easily drop it at the track, or before. Good luck..
The 3" stuff was fished out of the dumpster, take off GM flanges, take a look at Silverado stock exhaust.

but i like your exhaust idea.
Just run the 3 inch exhaust and drop it at the track. You are just wasting your money. At your power level 3.5 inch exhaust will not gain you anything except noise.
I find the dynomax ultra flow 3 inch muffler flows awesome and is quiet.
I ran 127mph through the full 3 inch exhaust before with no cutout. What is the point of spending that money and adding that weight when you are dropping the backhalf of the exhaust at the track anyways?
Cheers,
Chris
ps- I am not convinced the stepped headers are any better than MAC's either in your application.
A 422 dynoed 500+RWHP through the STOCK MACs and STOCK MAC ORY. I am sure your car will see next to nothing from the stepped headers and you will spend a shitload of coin to boot.

Terry, consider a 3" true dual X-pipe setup, that way you wouldnt have to run open header to benefit from a merge collector. Pics of your penultimate exhaust in my sig.
I'll move that money over to the trailer fund. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
