Default Help! Need Walbro 340 in-tank pump install advice!

I am putting a Walbro 340 in tank pump into my '02 Firehawk this weekend and I was hoping for some advice. I have heard that the sending unit's are different and you have to make a few modifications to get the 340 to work. I know a few people have done this mod. Any advice for me? I did an archive search and all I got was a few people asking the same questions.

Thanks for the info.

-Geoff

According to racetronics if you just put the in the 340 with 99 up cars you will have problems running the pump with less than 1/4-1/2 tank or so. The stocker has small line to what they have termed a jet pump, the 340 does not have this line. The jet pump is supposed to keep the the baffle around the pump filled with fuel. Well when I had a stocker it would have problems with less than 1/4 tank of gas also.

Anyway the 340 will work you will have to splice it in to the stock wires. Also the pump comes with a different size outlet than stock so you will have to adapt from one size hose connection to another.

Also the way I have mine is the pump pickup is fully extended to the bottom of the tank. This will prevent it from starving under low fuel levels in the tank.

So basically its real easy to install and works fine at least for the Incon crowd.

Get the one from ARE. They sell the 340 in a converted form. Already has a complete harness wired up for you and all modifications are done. As for the install, I cant help you. I paid 200 bucks and had my local shop do it..Yup, Im lazy <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Thanks for the info on ARE. I have left them two messages now, so hopefully somebody there will call me back and I can get the pump!

They called me back and said that I have to send them my sending unit. They will modify it, install the new pump, and then send it back. I am not sure I can keep my car offline for the 2 or 3 weeks that this will take. I was really hoping that they had the kit for the '02's.

Gary, thanks for the info - i think I will be taking the same route that you did!

The Walbro pump is smaller than the stock unit and lack's the jet pump like Gary said above. The jet pump is used to fill the bucket that the fuel pump sit's inside of to prevent fuel starvation on hard cornering. Your gonna have to cut the bottom off the rubber sleeve that the stock fuel pump sit's in and use a band clamp to secure the new Walbro in place. Your also gonna have to cut the bottom of the bucket off so the Walbro pump will slide down to the bottom of the tank so it will not suck air when the tank get's low. You will need to cut off the stock fuel pump connector, and splice the Walbro one on in it's place. I bought the one from ARE, which came with a new wiring harness that run's all the way up to your battery. This harness is supposed to supply more voltage to the pump, thus giving you around 20% more fuel volume at WOT. You probably don't need to worry about the harness, but it is a nice plug-n-play upgrade. BTW, the ARE packages are made by Racetronix:

For now, though, I am just going to patch the pump in. Thanks for all the info.
