Default header questions again.

What is the deal with stepped headers? Do they really do anything? What sizes (length and diameter) are good for the primary tubes?

Jeff, the design theory behind stepped headers is that, if the length & diameter is designed properly, they will extract more usable torque by increasing exhaust gas velocity and scavaging from a given motor than a single size tube due to the exhaust gases expanding as they leave the combustion chamber. You will actually see some Pro-Comp cars using a 3 step header design instead of 2 step to truly maximize results <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

Unfortunately the sizing is very motor dependent. Spec's that should be considered when designing a stepped exhaust include: cam size, head flow, torque curve and peak usable HP.

Hope this helps.
