AIR Pump Inlet Filter?

AIR Pump Inlet Filter? I have a question on the operation of the AIR pump. My current setup uses a mini round-style K&N filter for the AIR pump inlet filter. How important is the cleanliness and health of this filter?
If the AIR pump just feeds the exhaust stream with more air to help the cats burn off unused HC's, then that's good. Otherwise, if this pump feeds the engine intake, then I need to take better care of that little round filter since that air is going into my engine.
Anyone know whether this pump sends air into the engine or just the exhaust?
