Ported maf=cut black center piece?????
I cut the black part in my MAF a few days ago, car runs fine... (tried to put my GMAF ends on my stock MAF)
Just cutting the plastic piece that goes down (4 cuts, dont want to cut the wires) shouldn't cause anything to change.... the stock maf still has some metal shields in the middle.....
I took the ends off my GMAF and put them on my stock MAF center part..... I also have a lid and FTRA ... leaned the hell outta the car. I put my stock maf back in now (stock maf ends, not ported and not descreened) and it seems ok.... gotta richen it up a little bit w/my MAFT though.....
I'd suggest a MAFT (though I personally think they suck.... they're up to verson 4.2 or 5.2... i bought it at 1.0... that means they have had ALOT of bugs and most likely still have bugs)
FYI: Some folks have had tranny problems (A4) associated with ported MAF's. Something about less reported load causing the PCM to reduce line pressure in the trans.

That's easy enought to fix Get a Vacuum Modulated Transmission

yeah...thats what i have heard...i ordered a new stock maf...i am going to mess with again tomorrow. Thanks for the info though. is your car an a4...if so did or do you have any tranny problems?

Mine's an M6 and so I hogged out my MAF to the point that SVO 30#'s work just fine without any injector scaling via LS1Edit.
I ported my MAF about a month ago. The article says to cut out the black center piece on the sensor. I did this, as well as port the ends, and my SES light came on shortly afterwards. My car, however, ran awesome, just threw codes all over the place. I ended up just getting a whole new stock maf sensor and ends. Put the new sensor in and left the ported ends on and the SES light didn't come back on. Supposedly this is the kind of mod that works good for some people but not for others. I noticed a nice gain in the top end. All four guys in the article ported the sensor and not one had a problem. Go figure. Did you just get a new sensor, or did you get the ends with it too?

Same thing with my car. Ran great with a gutted MAF until I later removed the black plastic center cross post. It just got too lean and would throw codes.
Seems like 98s like the gutted MAFs better than the newer year LS1s.
My suggestion..... Leave the plastic rod in place. If you cut it out and your engine dont like it, your MAF might as well go into the trash.
