Default A/C blowing cool NOT cold

It's hot today and my a/c is not blowing cold air. It's cool, but not cold. I have done a little looking and the radiatior fans aren't coming on when I turn the a/c on. I'm pretty sure they used to whenever the a/c was on. Aren't they supposed to come on and stay on high when the a/c is on?

Engine temp seems to be staying ok. And another funny thing is that it seems to blow cooler air when sitting still at a traffic light and it warms up slightly when you start moving. I'd think that moving air would help. I have shop manuals at home, just thought I'd ask ya'll first.

well, with my old '98 t/a, i had the ac compressor go out on me in the first 10k miles. and yes, it was instantaneous when it happened. it was very cold one minute, and then i got on the gas with the ac on and after i let off, it was blowing outside air. the compressor was replaced 3 times when i owned the car. they suck. so if your ac was blowing cool the other day, and now it's just blowing outside or warm air, take it in to the dealership and have them replace that compressor, cuz it's probably jacked. hope this helps.

The new AC stuff doesn't blow as cold as the good 'ol freon of days past. My AC never seems to blow very cold either, especially when sitting still. I'd say it's normal. See if you can compare it to someone else's F-body to be sure though.

Thanks for the response. I've had this car for four summers now. It's not normal, and it happened rather suddenly. It still is blowing cool air, but it used to be cold. The compressor is running and everything seems normal except for the fans. It seems to me that they used to go on high whenever I turned on the a/c. I can't hear them, so I'm guessing their not on high or maybe not running. The funny thing is the car is running relatively cool, even on a hot day like today.

I'm going to look it over tonight when I get home. Any other help would be appreciated.

Your freon is probably low. Same thing with my car this summer. Turned air on and it never got cold enough. Had half a pound of freon put in it and it shoots ice cubes

I agree with zee quick.A can or so of R134a should do the trick.Whoever puts the freon in for you can check for leaks with a sniffer.

Well, thanks. Nobody has anything to say about the fans? I swear they used to run on high whenever I turned on the a/c.

Ugggh I hate taking my car anyplace for service. I try and do everything myself. Oh well, I'll read the shop manual and give it a looking over tonight.

If it's just a slow leak, and a recharge is needed I wonder how much the equipment would cost to do it myself? I have a pump that would probably work as an evacuation pump if that ever became necessary.

You can get freeon put in at a gas station if you want and it'll cost you about 50 somethin bucks instead of taking it to dealer or repair shop.

Except that these car don't use Freon. They take R134a refrigerant. If it was an all of a sudden thing it probably isn't the refrigerant. It could be a rapid leak in the system that developed (which you need to find before putting more R134a in), compressor went out, filter got clogged up, or some other things. Start simple work your way up. I'm gonna go ask my dad about this (A/C man) and I'll get back to you.

Well, I have now finally determined that the fans were functioning ok. It was a slow process of losing it's cooling power. It was still blowing cool air, just not cold.

I dropped the car off this morning at a local repair shop I trust to take a look at it.

I'm certain the fans should come on with when you flip the AC on. Check that out before you spring for a new compressor

Just got some bad news. The shop says it needs a new compressor. I think he said it's leaking at one of the seams.

I did manage to get the high speed fans to come on the other day. I think the reason the high speed fans weren't coming on much was due to the fact that the a/c system wasn't working properly. Either the condenser wasn't putting out much heat or the compressor wasn't loading the engine as it would if working properly.

New accumulator and compressor (both OEM). The grand total was $1200. It is now shooting ice cubes tho.
