Default LT1 vs. LS1 exhaust sound

What exactly is it about the design of the LT1 vs. the LS1 that makes the exhaust note on the LT1 so much deeper? I mean, both could use the same diameter and similar design y-pipe, catback pipes, and muffler (for instance, SLP's 2OTL exhaust), and they will sound very different from nearly the same displacement.

I assume that the shape and design of the ports and valves and the way they open and close based on the cam would tend to form the sound the same way the mouth, throat, vocal cords, and sinus cavities do when we speak. What's the part or design of the LT1 that gives it such a deeper voice?

I think the fact that the LT1 is an iron block, and the LS1 is aluminum has something to do with the exhaust sound. Not entirely sure though. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

I have heard that it is the firing order that actually makes the tone different.

Head design, compression ratio, & the iron block may all play a part in it as well but I'm not totally sure.

John, This reminds me that I did not start the car at the cruise-n for you to listen to the B&B. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Embarrassed]" src="gr_emb.gif" /> Guess we all got side-tracked talking about other things. Sorry about that. Next time though for sure! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> Your new NBM SS is awesome! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />

And of course welcome to the board. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Thanks, Wayne!

I'll definitely want to get a listen to that B&B setup. If it sounds anything like the Route 66 setup on the Vettes, I'm thoroughly interested. So far, though, I've been wanting to hear the SLP 2OTL (two on the left) like my '97 had. I really liked that sound...of course I know it won't be nearly as rumbly as the LT1.

Its comparing day and night. The Lt1 is a different motor. Why does a Mustang motor sound different than a camaro??
