Someone suggested that might be the problem with the detonation issues I've been having. How would I know if one was bad?

if you had a bad coil pack, most likely something would happen such as there not being enough voltage to throw a spark or something, causing a missfire.

That being said would that eliminate the possibility of it being a coil pack?
I've never thrown a code for a coil pack ever...to my knowledge.

In auto tap you can check for misfires on a certain cylinder. Find out which one it is and switch the coil to a different cylinder and see if it does the same thing. Do the same thing with the plug and wire. That would be the easiest.
