Default Free Lid! Pics Inside!

All I did was take a dremel the "unneeded" air box pieces on the side. Then cut some squares from the left over plastic from the free ram air mod. Then epoxied the plastoc squares to the sides where the sotck airbox used to be.

Im pretty impressed with the results dont look to bad and is jus as good as a lid.

I agree, but still guess it qualifies as a free mod.

i think the pitch with the lid is the extra volume, not necessarily the "smoother" flow..

my buddy and i did that to his car...and still got gain from switching to a clear mti lid, as if we hadn't even messed with the stocker.

Did you use the dremol on the inside? thats where most of the air is being restricted with all of those support plasstic fins that run diagnally from each other, I am sure you might be able to find a slight difference if any at all by getting rid of the resonator. I am in college too and paying insurance and car payment suck it up man its only 89 bucks, It is worth it.

If you must do that as a free mod, like someone else mentioned, dremel the inside/underside fins out. Also port your throttle body.

FWIW, i've seen a ton of used lids for 50 bucks. Some cheaper.

Ive posted like ten times that im looking for a lid and no offers...haha....no hard feelings guys....Honestly I was bored thought it might help somewhat. I realize it doesnt look good I realize it was probably pointless. But every "new" idea had to start somewhere right. Some guy sat in his garage one day and said hey I think if I make some kind of device to shove more air into my engine I might get more horsepower. Now the guy who did that is prob a gajillionaire cuz he was bored one day and decided to try something. So calm down guys it was an experiment.....And if someone wants to get rid of a used lid for cheap PLEASE PLEASE PM ME!

Hate to break it to you man.... but it was proved long ago that the gains from the lid didn't come because it got rid of the stock baffles on each side. It was due in majority to the fact that the lid had the larger circular mouth for the air to flow through, instead of that flattened oval area that the stock airbox has. There was testing done back around 98 or 99 to find out why lids picked up so much extra power and that was the reason. They did several test fittings with different combinations of leaving baffles on, changing the shape, and changing the mouth of the lid. Yes, those baffles do hold some air and restrict flow just a bit, but as I said, it's that crappy flattened oval mouth that loses the power.

Good results on making it yourself and I'm definitely impressed with your initiative; however, I don't think you'll pick up much at all with it.

Scotty Z nailed it.

The gains are mainly in the transition from the plenum to the oval feed for the maf sensor. Next in line is the webbing that zaps velocity and creates turbulence, and the resonator deletion was just a bonus. -Joshua

P.s. Buy a lid... even brand new @ $100 it's the best money spent when on a budget. Nice try though.
