Where is the Water Temp. Sensor?

Where is the Water Temp. Sensor? I'm thinking of putting a pod on the a-pillar with either an electrical or mechanical water temp guage. My son has both that he bought for a truck he was building and never used. They are the Autometer white face Phantom Guages. On the drivers side of the cylinder head, there is a sensor at the front of the head beside the #1 exhaust port. Is this the water temp sensor? If I change this, I assume this somehow goes through the pcm, is disconnecting the stock sensor going to set off an SES light or something

Re: Where is the Water Temp. Sensor? I've always assumed the fans were turned on/off in response to the ECT,and probably some other functions rely on it as well. For an aftermarket sensor install do a search, I believe folks have installed them in a plug above the starter.
