Nuzee & OldSStroker thanks
Using 981 springs? This sounds like a reasonable cam. As far as the heads go, I'd just do some bowl work and a good valve job....but,
If you plan to spend more than about $500, consider upgrading to Vortec (L31 truck) heads. You'll need a new intake, like a Performer Vortec ($160) or RPM Vortec ($180). You could probably score the heads from a salvage yard. A valve job, slight milling and larger spring pockets should be enough. These heads are worth 30-50 hp over what your engine came with, even with moderate porting. The extra compression will help a lot, too.

If your gonna get heads ported you might as well start with a better core. The stock Vortec heads flow about 230cfm and they have a awesome combustion chamber and great swirl, both of those things will get you more power than your heads ported.
BASICALLY I'M TRYING TO SAY IS GET SOME VORTECS! THEY ARE THE BEST SBC BUDGET HEADS OUT THERE!

Compare intake flows up to .500 lift. Vortec is even better that World Products, and most others.
Don't spend(waste?) money on more cam when you rebuild. Shop the junkyards for Vortec cores and use your new cam. I think you will be more than pleased (amazed, maybe), even if you don't do anything to the Vortec ports.
Around here on circle track iron-head racing engines the Vortec heads are outlawed because they are so good!
