I would like to offer my 2 cents on this ram air thing. I've read all the posts in the advanced section under ram effect as well have just completed my own "Sux2bu intake" design, which can be seen a few pages back. Before I installed the ram air intake I had the FRA mod. At the track, the IAT's would climb to 150 degrees while in the staging lanes. At launch I would be pulling timing due to the high IAT's. By the end of the quarter mile I would only be at 85 degrees IAT. Well above ambient. So based on my oberservation, the FRA mod was inhaling a lot of hot air. Now when I was on the highway, I would always end up at ambient due to the air constantly flowing.

My hptuners got stolen so I cannot log IAT's currently. However, I created my intake design out of 100% plastic parts because I didn't want the air to even have an excuse to get heated up at idle or any other time. Before my ram air design, I went 12.77 at 110.25 with a DA of 100ft. with a 60' of 1.99. After the addition of skinnies and ram air, I went 12.67 at 110.25 with a DA of -100ft with a 60' of 1.93. I then took the ram air off and went 12.67 at 110.25 with the same 60'. I should really bracket race this car!

Now without HPTuners I can't tell what the pcm is doing. I don't know if its pulling timing from KR or another source. Hell it might not be doing anything. So I won't comment on whether or not ram air works until I can make back to back runs on the same night while EFILive is monitoring things.

So...based on my observations, if the pcm is not controlling certain power making functions(timing, fuel, etc) then my results support that ram air, in fact, is a myth at 1/4 mile speeds just like the ram effect thread in the advanced section says it is. And that any gains should be attributed to decreased intake temps or other pcm functions that have not been monitored.

Anyone want to do a small write up about this? Please? What all needed to be moved at the front to make room for those hoses and what are you using to attach the plate that the filter rests on to the frame?

If you look through the thread that I posted here: https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-external-engine/474888-homemade-camaro-ram-air-pics.html I give a small write up about doing something like this.

There are a few ways to go about this setup but the way I did it involved a fair amount of cutting. Other members have done it in a way that involves less cutting.

my friend has a setup similar to this on his third gen, we did a back to back test with my scanner and his IATs were no more than 1-2 degrees cooler than mine, i have a 90 bend off the throttle body to the MAF, to a short 3" tube, to a cone filter (all this sits between the radiator and the engine)

so if there are results they must be from the ram air aspect...

Use some duct tape to hold the ducting to the boot. So it doesn't tear loose.

you can't use duct tape for its intended purpose...that would be crazy

Well obviously, if not it would be called all these threads would say "cold air intake" rather than "ram air intake".

Not really, whether it works or not it's still ram air if for no other reason than cold air instantly makes people think of a tube with a cone filter

I was responding to the above comments about IATs, several people were questioning if it would be an issue and potentially a larger benefit than the ram air itself, but from my readings that might not be true. I can also get readings back to back with a stock trans am to see if it has any difference there.

I thought it would have been too obvious. Maybe not.

There's only like 4 things there. 2 register boots, some flexible duct and that piece he got from SUX2BU.

I'm pretty sure that you can make it. If he made it and sent it to you it would probably not be together when he sent it. And that would be the same as going to Lowe's and just buying the ****.

I would suspect that setup to be a little noisy at low speeds and bumpy roads considering it's tin...have you had any problems?

If it's rattling against something it might make some noise. I had a similar setup and never heard anything.

Just saw this and thought I would post an update almost 3 years later. Still running the same setup with the same holley filter. Some observations that might help folks in the future...

1. The filter gets dirty fast...if you drive your car daily plan on cleaning/changing the filter probably every month.

2. I've driven through some very heavy rain storms and had zero problems. I would suggest using an oil guaze filter with this setup just for added insurance.

3. I cut a lot of metal bracing in front where the lid sits...haven't had one issue with structural integrity.

4. Numerous used oil analysis reports show no increased silcon from this setup compared to my stock setup. The increased airflow plus the oil guaze filter hasn't let in anymore dirt than normal.

I definitely recommend this mod and the other derivatives of it over the FRA. Do nothing at all before doing the FRA in my opinion.
