Why the aluminum pipe?

I have a 98 WS6 and on the top radiator hose there is a section of aluminum pipe approximately 8 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. What is the purpose of this, and would this be a suitable location to tap into for a water temperature sender for use with an Auto Meter gauge?

Its the power steering cooler. and I wouldnt tap it <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Hey Mike...glad you found out the problem with the coil pack....yes..that alum. pipe is the cooler for the power steering..if you feel the bottom of it you'll notice the lines in and out of it. It is a "tube in a tube " design.
