Default When your crank pully gets loose.....this has to be common....

About 10 k after my cam install. Damn ! Car was running perfect, but I saw some oil on the driveway after I drove home from work so I popped the hood. Both belts misaligned/thrown and there was oil all over. The crank pully worked all the way up to the steering column. Why is there so much oil ?

I am getting it towed to Wheel 2 Wheel on Thursday, the guy said this was fairly common on the vettes (I had thought this was only true 2005+) but anyway.....anybody else had this happen and is it possible there is any other major damage ?
Car ran, idled and drove fine until I popped the hood. Lucky I checked it.
Should I get a smaller pully & new belt ?

Probably was not torqued correctly, and they didnt use loctite either.

As for the oil, when the pulley starts coming off, there is a quarter inch gap around the crank before the seal, so all the oil thats usually lubricating the timing chain is now spitting right out the front.

As long as you didnt cause any damage from running it low on oil, you didnt likey damage anything other than the belts.

I would like to think this wouldnt be a common problem, but anyways check to make sure your front main seal is still good but I would replace it anyway, being that it costs less than $20. Buy a new bolt also. Install your seal and pully with old crank bolt torqued to 240 ftlbs install new bolt torque to 37ftlbs then stretch another 140 degrees you dont need to use loctite if you install it correctly. You can save alot of money doing it yourself and you get the satisfaction knowing you did the work instead of paying or having someone else do it. And with the money you save go buy an ASP pulley if you dont have one already.

i cant say ive torqued mine down to 240, but i did it as tight as i possibly could with my small pipe and a breaker bar..somewhere around 160-170 lb ft. hasnt backed out. Im now using an ARP bolt. locktight the hell out of it!

Mine came loose twice after proper torque and locktight. Third time I got it as tight as I could with a breaker bar. No problems since.

I found the easiest way to get the correct amount of torque is to use a 18"1/2" breaker bar with a heavy 3' pipe on the end. Have someone put the car in gear w/ the E-brake on and stand on the brakes. I did this and actually went over the 140 degrees of twist after the new bolt was torqued to 37 ft/lbs. I've heard many people saying they couldnt get that extra 50 degrees or so, this worked like a charm for me remember leverage is your friend.
