Default Running rich...........

I know this maybe a stupid question but I have been reading about people on here saying they are running lean or rich all the time. What are the tell tell signs if any that I could use to tell me if my car is running rich, besides using like ls1 edit or something.

have a buddy drive behind you on the expressway. hit its..if a lot of black smoke comes out and it smells like rotton eggs you are runnin rich.

Usually you should only worry about runnin' lean/rich with lots of mods and LS1 edit. If you run a mostly stock set-up with stock pcm tuning you will get a ses light when a/f ratio's get off track. This is what it is designed to do, warn owner of drivability/emission problem. That goes for all light duty vehicles 1996 & newer that must have E.P.A. mandated OBD II powertrain control systems. If a/f is off either you will know running wise or pcm will let you know with that old service engine soon <img border="0" alt="[Banging Head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" /> light.

Well AutoTap is the only certian way, but if you are running rich you should be able to smell gas when you go WOT. There will also be a light tannish brown color on your exhaust tips if your running rich.

well lets see, if you exhaust smells really bad, if your exhaust tips are jet-black etc... i changed exhaust tips a week after i got my longtubes on and after2-3 hours of driving, they were jet black...no joke. between my 160t-stat, longtubes, & fuel pressure regulator i was running extra rich. thank god for maft's.

Could you guys explain why I am only getting around 220 miles to a tank of gas! I get on my car prolly 5 times every tank of gas. That about avg for everyone or way above normal?

My 2k m-6 gets between 240- 275 per tank depending on city or highway or jumpin' on it <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> B.T.W. heads cam l.t. o.r.p. tuning blah blah .I don't know just my .02 cents

What is the significance or running rich or lean? More gas more power? Does it do harm to the car? What's the average solid ratio between fuel and air?

220 miles a tank!? You lucky bastard! I get around 170 with my 2002 M6 doing a 50/50 mix of highway/city driving. Granted I like to get on it alot but if Im not running rich now I probably will be with my new hooker LT's right? Time to visit the dyno shop or just buy a MAFT?
