Gutting the Cats
Thank-you, Becky
I've only gutted one cat, on an older
vehicle. Basically, you have to make
the ceramic honeycomb shatter into pieces
cmall enough to come out the hole. I used
a crowbar to ram it; a zip gun (air chisel)
might be better. One of the cats looks
easy, the other has more length and bend
to it and would be a little more work.
It took me maybe 15 minutes of determined
ramming to get her off <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> Once it goes, it
goes fast but the alumina substrate is tough
stuff. A more pointy tool (like the air chisel)
would make easier going.
I don't know whether you need O2 sims for
a gutted cat, or not. I guess not, with Edit.
You'll be miles ahead if you go with high-flow cats from one of this board's sponsors'. Don't gut your cats if you have to pass a emissions check. If no E check, run Hooker long tubes and the cat-back or duel exhaust of your choice.
Enjoy your cars.
If you really feel you must gut cats, try an nice Randall Model 21 "Little Game" @ $225. It would probably fit your hand well.
