Default headers

I am thinking about headers but am not sure if they would be worth it. I have done quite a bit of reading and it seems like the gains are not huge from them unless you start doing engine work, which i do not plan to do? I was thinking of going with flp's, but have a few questions on them. I had read some stuff where some people were having problems with them rusting and the coating coming off where they are welded near the collector? Also, what about clearance for getting the oil plug and them banging the floor board, I read that they have redesigned the y-pipe is this true? My only mods are gmmg exhaust and lid, not really planning anything else major.

Stop looking at Dyno numbers.

If you look at the average gain at the track, you will see where Headers shine. My car went from running consistant 110mph in the quarter before headers, to running 112 plus... not to mention difference in ET of 12.07 to 11.95.

I will agree that the stock setup is MUCH better than most people give it credit for, but if you are looking make more HP, headers are good investment.

Just had FLP's installed yesterday - can't speak for their long term coating "wear" yet of course, but I can say they went in with no probs. Oil plug clearance is ok, no hitting on steering gear parts, and no floor banging.

KOOKS KICK ***!! just got em and installed em love em!!!! go ahead and get the matching y-pipe if you get Kooks headers, it matches and looks awesome. they are somewhat a pain to install but over the factory exhaust you gain about half and inch or more of ground clearance. STAINLESS STEEL ONLY!!!! that way you don't have to worry about cracking or peeling of the ceramic coating; cuz it does wear off.

Not just FLPs but possibly ANY coated mild steel header can have it's coating start to flake/burn off over time...try to stick with a stainless long tube such as QTPs and the like.
And in most cases the power gains from long tubes ARE worth it.

getting the headers in the right position and twisting them right is annoying, and we had to take the oil filter off to get em in. probably could have done it with it one but it was much easier with it off.

I'm not running any cats since the kooks y-pipe and headers has no place for them and they do have two holes for the rear O2 sensors, should i get O2 sims and plug the wholes or should i put the rear O2 sensors in the wholes and everything will be fine?? i was reading from a different post that codes were set with the missing cats

Kooks is a very nice way to go. I have sold several sets and everyone that has called back tells me that they went on very nice and make good hp. The good thing about Kooks is they come stainless, and they give you options. For the F body we can get you 1 3/4 all the way to 1 7/8 stepped to 2", Race or with air fitings. If you need a Y pipe I can get you one with or with out cats.

******Very good pricing I might add at SDPC on Kooks!******

Definately invest in headers. It feels much more responsive then before the install. It was the mod I have invested in so far and definately gave more seat of the pants feel.

Headers are well worth the investment. I was able to hook my tires very well off the line until I had Mac mids installed. It made such a difference in my torque curve that I can no longer hook my tires out of the hole and I only have mid length headers.Longtubes would be even better. My engine is factory stock.

Headers are a must IMO.

I am getting the Mac headers and cats and Y installed this week.

Do you know what kind of gains (HP/RWT) you received from the mids?

I'm in the same situration as JPWS6...I have the gmmg exhaust and an slp lid...my major concern however is with the gmmg and a LT set up with cats that it will be too loud for a daily driver...keeping in mind that I don't find my setup right now loud...how much louder will a LT setup with a catted Y make it...and I've heard that it actually makes it quieter inside? how much truth is in that?

On my 99 Z28 when all it had was a lid, k&n, mac ory, and dyno mouth it ran w/ 2.73gears and a gutted stock verter to stall up to 2200 it ran 13.4@104mph on 275/40 nittoDRs Then after i added 3.42 gears and i put on mac 1 3/4 mids and ran a bullet muffler off each hedder, i ran a desent 13.1@107mph w/ 2.0 60fts on 315/35nittoDRs. So id say the gears & the macs help a bit. On my SS when it used to just a lid, K&n, Mac mids w/ catted hi-flow y-pipe and borla exhaust, Centerforce DF clutch, stock suspension, it ran a 13flat@109 w/ a 2.0 60ft on BFG 275/40 DRs but then my driving wasnt all that great. Anyway, what im tryin to say is Macs are pretty good!!!!

MPH the catted y will quiet the exhaust down a good bit. The gmmg will be loud, but not obnoxiously so w/the catted y. You should be good to go. If all else fails, get some cutouts before the cats for track use
