Default Cutout location?

I want two cutouts after my headers but how far away from the headers do they have to be so I don't have any problems? I have SLP headers, ORP's, and y-pipe. Can I put them where the ORP's are or should they go in the y-pipe? Thanks for any info.

anything closer than 12 inches away from the header collectors is a risk. Doesn't mean you WILL have problems, but you're safer going at least 12 inches back.

When I had one on my car I had it under the passenger side rear seat.

A risk of what? Just curious, since I have my cutouts right after the headers..

something to do with burning up valves or something like that... I've heard it's a wives tale but i've also heard people say it's happened to them.

Valve burning is not a problem with LT's. Put the cutouts 12" behind your LT collector to make the most power.

Actually its not just a "more power" issue, the 12" is to ensure that you don't suck fresh air in at idle and confuse the O2 sensors, which will throw the car into limp mode. I am facing the same decision making process as you, and at the same time trying to make a "quick swap" setup with flanges, so the race pipes/cutouts can be removed, either for temporary cat install for inspections, or to do work on the engine, etc. The problem is fitting everything. If you put the cutouts where the race pipes would normally go, you're at like 8 or 9 inches from O2 sensor to opening of cutout. Not 12, but also not 1 inch like running open headers is (which is the only time I've heard of the "limp home" mode happening). The other option is to weld cutouts into the Y pipe, probably on the inside for clearance, and leave the race pipes in. I'm still trying to figure out how to make it all work.

I've got dual Qtecs, dual cutouts, and lots of 3 bolt flanges, and even a spare SLP 3" Y-pipe sitting on the floor here, just trying to figure how to make it all fit.

Wow Dave you're thinking the same as me on this. Like you I'm not sure what to do. Weld them in the y-pipe or put them where the orp's go. A buddy measured his cutout and said it was 10". I was looking on the y-pipe and where I wanted to weld them after the rear O2's looked to short. I'm thinking that the orp's are 11.5" long so I'm going to shorten the one end of the cutout and weld a little extra pipe on the other end and just put them in place of the orp's. I'm going to get mine done next week and I'll email you some pics. What would be nice is to have an extra y-pipe like you.
