I guess you are debating between hypertech and SLP right. Well SLP bought out hypertech so they are the same thing. I belive they are german made. The maker is MOTORAD. Also if your water pump has been changed after 04', you have an LS2 water pump and need one for a GTO or Vette which is just the guts, not the housing. Maybe I was wrong and you ment 180 or 160, get a 160 it will really run at about 185 tho. The stocker opens at 195 and a 180 will run about 200 I belive

Stock. When you get it tuned for the heads/cam have the fan activation temps turned down to activate in line with the thermostat opening rather than waiting.

Might consider a 180 given your location, but personally I wouldn't go 160. You do not actually want to operate with temps that low. Cooler is only good to a point...

The 160 sucks! I had one and took it out. It ran WAY too cold in the winter, and once it heats up isn't much cooler than stock. You can keep your car as cool as you want by adjusting the fan on/off points. I have a hypertech 180, but it is a waste of money. It opens BARELY before the stock one does. Through tuning, I've got my temps right where I want them. I'd keep the stock t-stat in and set the fans to keep your temps where you want.

The paper that came with my Hypertech 160 said the temp would actually be around 172 or so.

The above statement is true according to my infrared temp gun. I simply pointed temp gun at fully warm thermostat housing and recorded reading.

I have the 160 my temps run about 180 with fan control in traffic. Down the highway it runs about 172-174 depending on the day.

I went with a Murray Plus part number 37960. It's a 160 thermo for an LS1, and I got it for 20 bucks at O Rly's. I also had mine tuned for it though, I hear it's a waste to get a lower thermo without tuning the fans

What kind of difference will there be if you keep the stock thermostat, but lower the fan temps. According to my temp gauge I am running at about 190-200.

Your temp gauge may as well be an idiot light, if it's stock. They have three positions: Cold, operating temp, and oh ^$&# it's about to overheat.

Having the fans come on earlier (stock therm) will help, and is still my recommendation.
