please help car keeps throwing serpitine belt
either it, or one of your pulleys (most
likely the one that feeds it) is offset
from the belt plane. I just got done
with a second alternator swap on a car
that was chewing its belt up (not GM).
The replacement alternator had a pulley
that was 1/8" further stickout. There
are different alternator shaft collar
shims that you can use to set depth, but
the rebuilders only use one standard one.
On our cars the crank pulley feeds the
tensioner. Seems not coincidental that
your new crank pulley precedes belt throwing.
Look for both offset and for runout (anything
making the tensioner "bounce" gives opportunity
to skip a groove).
A high-lip tensioner will help keep things
together, but you don't want to see a lot
of edge scrub going on. If you see anything
odd at the crank pulley, then fix it at the
source is my recommendation. Do they have any
alignment shims to use in setting crank pulley
depth relative to belt plane?
Try putting a belt back on with no tools at 1am in a dark parking lot with 5* temps and -20* windchill. BrrrRRRRRRRrrrr c-c-c-c-CooOOLD! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />
