whats the story for pulleys?

whats the story for pulleys? could some one help me out here? what is the big advantage of pulleys and a belt or is there any? it seems like they sell out fast and they are very popular? what is the story? asp pulleys & belt kit?

Re: whats the story for pulleys? The way pulleys give you more horsepower is that they slow down your accessories so the accessories don't rob so much HP from the engine. Slowing the accessories will actually make them live longer.
The problem with pulleys are that they slow down your alternator reducing its capacity. This is not a problem with a stock electrical system but if you have a monster stereo, or lots of electronic gadgets in your car it can be a problem. The other problem is proper installation. Most of the people that have a problem with the pulleys are due to improper installation. Make sure you know what you are doing with regards to a press fit pulley or make sure your install shop knows what they are doing.
ASP seems to make a good product. They are the only shop that hasn't had issues with regards to proper balance or manufacture. That is why they are hard to get...ASP is the most popular company that makes a good pulley.
