Default WTF is that RATTLE!?

I'm losing my mind trying to find this stupid rattle in the car...

Whenever I hit a bump it rattles, and past about 75mph it rattles constantly (VERY annoying) It is very difficult to locate because the sound is difficult to pinpoint....

However I think I've pinpointed it to roughly below the center console underneath the car, I can FEEL the bump in the Parking brake handle when driving... Anyone have any idea what this might be??

I have already checked the exhaust hanger on the pass. side and all the bolts are tight, there not really much else moving around under there, I smacked the hell outta the Y-pipe thinking it might have been something it was touching, but could not reproduce the sound.

Someone please throw some ideas at me, this is making me mad!

this may be sound dumb, but are you sure its not the center console itself? the ash trays are known to rattle... I can't think of anything under the car that would rattle if its not the y-pipe

It sounds very metallic so I kind of ruled out the center console, but that did cross my mind, its no big deal to take it out and check it out though, its worth a look.

Any other ideas?

Mods: This should probably be in the general maintenance and repair section, oops

A4's are notorious for center console rattles, but those are clearly IN the car, not from underneath. My Y-pipe on my LT1 car used to bang on the tunnel brace. I added a couple of washers to space it on one side and that solved it.

It only does it when going fairly fast (75mph+) or when hitting a bump, like its the wind moving something around. But I can't figure out wtf could be moving around under there

Your Y-pipe is definitely moving; question is, is it banging on something? Look real carefully for evidence of a mark where contact could occur. My LTI car did exactly as you describe. Bumps would cause it, or enough speed would cause enough general vibration to get it going. It was right under my console and it would drive me nuts. Is your stock tunnel brace still there?

No i bet it is going to be a solid rod end or a torque arm, possibly a subframe connector. It is probably happening because of suspension rigidity.

Are you talking about a tie rod end? and what do you mean because of suspension rigidity ?

Sorry I'm a bit slow when it comes to suspension stuff

What suspension components do you have that are aftermarket? Spohn/Hotchkis/BMR/Wolfe...ect. If any.

Stock, other than a BMR driveshaft safety loop if that counts...

Get under the car at the rearend and tap on the black metal brake covers at the ends of the axle housing. It'a a good chance that's your noise. They tend to rattle over the smallest bumps.

Is this a serious suggestion? I tried smacking the hell out of the Y-pipe but it would not reproduce the sound so I dont think its the Y making this crazy ratlle

Mine had the same exact problem, but it was the destroyed stock torque arm bushing that did it to my car. Have you checked that out? Or possibly even the tranny mount?

It sounds like it is coming from the torque arm, I'll check it out

Have you ever removed your center console for anything? Take it back apart to make sure you didn't leave anything in there. Screw, bolt, socket.

Also, have you ever replaced your window motors? Check inside your doors. I lost a nut when I replaced my window motor on my drivers side. I couldn't find it so I said **** it. Its not that big.

That little tiny son of a bitch rattled like a **** until I got a magnet in there for about an hour and found it.

I think its something in your console.
