How bad do gutted cats sound? Ok here is the thing, I am broke beyond belief and getting married so I won't be able to get headers for at least a couple years, I have an SLP Y pipe, and don't wanna shell out all the money for cat bypass pipes, how bad does it really sound if I just gut my cats? I've heard it sounds horrible, I did it on my old LT1 and it sounded kinda hollow, also how much louder will my car be, I have the SLP 2otl and my fiance already thinks its too loud?

Re: How bad do gutted cats sound? the hollowed stock cats do sound like ***, well in my opinion they do. i hollowed mine out a couple years ago and then wished i haden't b/c of how they sound. But, to each his own. my .02

Re: How bad do gutted cats sound? i gutted my high flow cats recently and have no complaint about the noise. i ride with the radio down to hear the car anyway. i get a small backfire between gears at high revs, but no big deal. it sounds cleaner and a little deeper. not blaring. at certain rpm's, the sound resonates in the car-cool. it certainly turns heads.

Re: How bad do gutted cats sound? I will be gutting mine tomorrow, and replacing the studs in the Driver's side manifold. (See post elsewhere in the External Section) I have cut my muffler off also simce I was running a cut-out open all the time. Should sound completely obnoxious tomorrow night <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> . I am thinking I may have to buy a muffler to put in the IM pipe.
Maybe a Dynomax 3" in and out 12" long under the car, or a 10-Series DeltaForce Flowmaster 3" in and out 6.25" long after the IM pipe kicks up to go over the rearend. <img border="0" alt="[Burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

I run ported 2001 manifolds with hollowed stock cats and Flowmaster 3" dual 3" tailpipes. car idle sounds like a Bigblock Musclecar and sounds f..king nasty on dyno or track wot! None of my headered friends that i have run have beaten me either. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Re: How bad do gutted cats sound? With a flowmaster muffler they sound sweet!! I use to get compliments all the time. Most people thought I had headers! Now that I put the cam in it sounds even better! There is no wrasp or drone like with a cut out. I only open my cutout for serious runs now. It sounded like crap with the cutout open before the cam though!
And Mac's Headers sound like crap with gutted cats and a cut-out, unless you put a bullet muffler in the Y-pipe

Just the stock IM pipe and a 3" turndown now. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> That is why I wonder how long I will keep it that way after I get it put back together. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />
I think I'll like the one chamber 10-series FM in the IM pipe if I do put in a muffler.
