Default Hooker, Flowmaster, or something else?

hey guys. i finally have enought money to order either a loudmouth, hooker, flowmaster, dynomax, or random tech catback system. I do not want loudmouth because of drone. I'm kind of swayed toward hooker or flowmaster. I've heard flowmaster and it sounds nice, but i like the idle of hooker more. does anyone have a sound clip of a hooker catback or any of the others listed above that are NOT on thefbodyshop.com? Please list your opinions on the exhaust too. thanks.

I like the Hooker, its cheap and I went 12.0 with it before I added a cutout. I think its a great mod for the money

I'd go with random tech. I actually saw a stock SS add 16 hp on the dyno with just the cat-back. I thought that was pretty damn good for a system that has a muffler.

Don't waste your money on a catback. Spend 35 bones on a cutout and then spend the other $350 on other mods. The whole catback idea is not cost vs. hp effective.

I have the hooker catback. I think it looks very nice with the quad chrome tips and it sounds much more throaty than the stock exhaust. It's too tame for me though. It does sound nice at WOT though. Here's a sound clips:

haole_boySS has a very good point. A catback is not a cost effective performance mod. Sure, it'll get you some rwhp. You'd be better off with a cutout for the price.

why did you spend money on a cutout when you have a hooker cat-back where you can unbolt the muffler with 3 bolts and have the same thing.

hooker is tough to beat flows 900 cfm. flowmaster flows about 350.

Well, the sound clip from the FBodyShop is exactly what it will sound like. But since you want a different clip than the FBodyShop's, here are two of mine:

Just the lid and Hooker system at the time.

Hooker Catback

With my current mods, Full Hooker system (including Long Tube, ORY, Catback).

Hooker complete system

Go to my website if you want to here it in action. Except 1/4 mile runs, those are with the cutout open. Nor the dyno run, the car was completely stock.

IHMO, getting a catback vs. a cutout is for sound reasons. The cutout (to me) sounds like a dump truck when opened. As for HP difference, the cutout was worth only 7 HP/TQ vs. the Hooker. Why did I get both (incase you are wondering), because I have the SLP CME , which negates easily removing my Hooker muffler.

If I were you, I wouldn't even consider the flowmaster. Like you I don't like the loudmouth, so that narrows it down to the hooker, dynomax, or random tech. I don't know much about the dynomax.

With the hooker, you can drop off the muffler, so esentially like a cutout, plus you'll loose the 40 lbs or so of the muffler and cutout. That is why I bought the hooker.

If I bought a full cat back system I would have bought the Hooker system, but I just did a muffler and bought a polished Magnaflow stainless cross flow. Magnaflow or Dynomax are supposed to be the best flowing cross flow replacements at around 1100 cfm. (Mine was like 118.00 installed, the guy ordered it for somebody else). Deep tone, still pretty quiet on the highway.

I dynoed my slowmaster and my magnaflow catbacks back to back and gained not 1 hp! So either the magnaflow sucks or the slowmaster doesn't, who knows?

Oh well the magnaflow is MUCH louder at WOT!

Shoulda woulda coulda.....

Well dynos don't lie, in fact both runs were identical peak hp numbers and I even swapped in some synthetic oil on the second run. The car was also being tuned with ls1 edit so tuning was not an issue. The torque was however about 8 higher with the magnaflow, but the hp number was the same.

Don't believe all the hype about different catbacks.

I will say this, looking at both dyno sheets, there are spots throughout the rev range where the magnaflow was a slight bit higher than the slowmaster, but not enough to warrant swapping one for the other, at least in my eyes.

I bought the magnaflow thinking exactly what everyone else was, 1100 cfm vs 350 cfm, a no brainer. Boy was I wrong.

Oh well live and learn, at least it sounds better now and it's looks nicer.

I just had an ATI Procharger installed. I took off the Magnaflow muffler (and that god awful cut-out!!) and replaced it with a Hooker cat-back.

I love the sound of the Hooker, and I didn't just buy it because it was cheap. If I'm 7K into a supercharger set-up, I wanted what sounded the best. Even though it's the cheapest one, Hooker got my business.
