Default Fan Switch Mod

Went to Pep Boys today and found that they
have both an "economy" ($21.99) and a newer
version of the adjustable fan thermostatic
switch. The newer one uses a thermistor by
the looks of it, all electric. The one in
the Web docs I have seen uses a pressure
bulb and capillary tubing (the "economy"
version). I'm not a big fan (heh) of
these, 'cause you can fix a broken wire
but any damage to the capillary tube or bulb
loses the working fluid (and you'd have to
guess what was used, and try to refill).
The thermistor probe is also much smaller
than the bulb and mungs fewer radiator fins.
This is Hayden model #3647, you can find it
with the oil coolers. The fancy one is $39.99

So I'm looking at the radiator area, and see
this sheet of black molded plastic sitting
where I'd like to put an independent "pusher"
electric fan. It looks to me like it only
serves to reduce radiator airflow. What if
any puspose does this have, do people just
take it out or leave it be?

Thanks for the heads-up. I got the older model switch but haven't installed it yet. I'm on my way back to Autozone to exchange and upgrade. I prefer the electronic over the manual myself!
