You definitely DO NOT want to hammer on the balancer. It will put a lot of stress on the crank, main bearings, and could even screw up the main seal. I repeat, DO NOT bang on the front of your crank. The balancer is a press fit on purpose and it will take a lot of force to push it on that way.
Either use a threaded stud and nut to pull it on, or heat it enough to be able to slide it on without much force.
