FWIW I did it on a 3rd gen, and I'd pay $600 just to avoid the hassle

You can cut a hole in floor between the rear speakers after you push the carpet back, people do it all the time.
You can pick up a nice plug and play fuel pump from our sponsers that will flow more, but still be able to be used on a stock setup. Most of the time, you are forced to buy the entire harness.
Here are some writeups.....

ok so I just got the fuel pump in today from TSP and I have read the write-ups above and I know its been done I just am a little uneasy about cutting right above the fuel tank and making sparks. Do you guys have any pointers or advice so I dont blow up me or my T/A? Thanks in advance
I would drop the tank, I would not cut the floor. tank come out easy, you then can support it on a jack if it is full then use the jack to get it back up in the car. if you got the walbro, you are going to have to hack saw the bottom of the fuel bucket, then remember to not run lower than a 1/4 of a tank, or you could be changing it again.
