Factory Firehawk Exhaust???
The "CONE" is a device that was inserted into the exhaust system on all 97 Camaro SS's built before April 1st 1997. The cone is in there to cut down on ambient noise. Some late 96's cars may have gotten this as well. No cars built after April 1st 1997 with the dual dual exhaust received this.
I believe this applies to the TOTL exhasuts. I don't think the cone was ever in the dual/dual.

There might some exceptions with the 98 cars or early 99 cars getting the ring of silence in their dual/duals but a revised noise standard (or enforcement of the current standard) force the ring of silence into the factory installed dual/dual's.
The cone of silence was used on some of the 2OTL systems as stated above.
The ring of silence was used on the Dual/Dual from the factory. My friend's car is a 2000 FireHawk. That car's Dual/Dual has a ring of silence in the left side.
My dual/dual always gets dirty on both sides. The FireHawk mentioned above only gets dirty on the right side.
All LS1 FireHawks get the SLP dual/dual as part of the FireHawk package. The SS has the SLP dual/dual as an option.
Due to the "quiet sound" of the dual/dual SLP revised the dual/dual last year, for more sound. I do not know if the revised dual/dual had the ring of silence. I pretty sure all revised dual/dual sold as aftermarket exhaust do not have any sort of silencer.
The dual/dual or Center Mount Exhaust(CME) is the same on SS/Firehawk. This is SLP's best exhaust. My cutout gave me a whopping negative 2 horsepower on the dyno. Maybe my computer needed to learn it though. I keep it capped now. The cutout is located right before the axle. I would be willing to trade someone my intermediate pipe with the cutout on it for their stock one from a CME(dual/dual).

I've seen one other car near stock car loose 6 rwhp on the dyno with a cut out open. Very similar to your experience. They capped the cut out and the power came back.

Huh, weird. I was always sure that the stock factory SS and WS6 and Firehawk all had the same exhaust. The SS and the Firehawk having the optional D/D exhaust. Can anyone verify that this isn't true?

The WS6 and standard SS have the same cat-back.
The SS could be ordered with SLP installed options. One of the options was the SLP dual/dual. This was the same exhaust the FireHawk got.
