Default Another QTP catted y.......

Failure

I just had my longtubes and catted y professionally installed 1 1/2 weeks ago and one of the cats just brushed against my driveway and now its spent, Ive put a whole 200 miles on the car and Im kind of upset. Im going to have to get a custom y made. My question is should I get a new magnaflow/carsound cat and use the other one thats still good, or get some random technology, or better yet magnaflow ultra flow metalic cats if they come out this week

I dont want to pay to get a custom y all fabbed and welded up and then have another cat failure cause then Ill really be pissed, so what do you guys recommend?

How did the cat go bad from rubbing it on the ground?

Yup, been there already. I blew out 2 sets of cats on my qtp ypipe before I turned the ypipe into a offroad ypipe. In all four cats, the material holding the honeycomb catalyst securely to the enclosure blew out or disintegrated and the honeycomb catalyst was rattling around as a whole in each one.

I gave up on those cheap magnaflow cats and run no cats right now and have more ground clearance to boot.

I think from the pressure on the outside case it caused the internals to break away. Im not positive but Im assuming this because the car was tuned properly after the install, the only thing i did to cause this to happen was scrape the driveway.

Well I spoke to Barry at Qtp and he said he would take care of me, send me out a new cat today He was a great guy to talk to and really helped me out, He stood behind his product even though the cats arent his. So hopefully I can get it on a lift this afternoon and see what can be done.

You may as well get him to send you out an extra 6 or so because you will need them for the future....

If you want cats I would invest in some random tech or the higher quality metallic magnaflow/carsound ones. The cheaper magnaflow/carsound are cheap for a reason.

Vader, Do you now why they broke? Did you scrape them? And was the car tuned after the install? Or are you saying they just broke for no good reason?

I got my new cat today, Im bringing it in tomorrow to have it welded in and were going to cut the welds and adjust the driver side up as high as we could without having clearance issues with the floor board. I really hope this new one doesnt go bad for no reason. I saw a sweet setup on here where someone used rt 70000 cats and had then custom installed them. I would like to do something similar but nobody in my area has a mandrel bending machine

Default Good News

Well I took it to the exhaust shop yesterday. They cut the pipe on the left side of the flowmaster merge collector and turned it up as high as they could, this in turn moved the cat up quite a bit. I no longer scrape on the driveway even with 2 people in the car So I can still use the great flowing y pipe, flowmaster merge, and cats it just needed some fabricating to make it work in the real world.

Ya, my car was tuned and I never even scraped anything besides some grass maybe. Either way, I went through two sets and it really pissed me off. All four cats were rattling around inside. They didn't break up at all, they just came loose from the sides of the enclosure.

I have noted lots of complaining about the QTP catted y for a very long time. As I have one I will chime in.

Is it a pain to get to fit right? Yes

Did it fit right the first time? No

Will it fit right with some work? Yes

Have I installed more than one, or do I do this for a living? No

How is the ground clearance? I have determined that with proper adjustment the ground clearance is comparable to stock. You must note that stock clearance sucked. I had many more scrapes on the ovaled stock y pipe than on my qtp y. I have over 15k on the qtp.

Will I clear all speed bumps and odd driveways? No, but you would not with the stock system anyways. My car is lowered 1" and I can clear most speed bumps.

If I were to do it over again I would likely go with with a custom 2 1/2" Y. With my setup I don't think a 3" y is needed.

Good Luck!!

The qtp catted ypipe is not the problem as long as you adjust it properly. The problem I had was with the crappy cats that came with it - nothing to do with QTP.

I am planning in taking it to a shop and cut the elbow that comes out of the flowmaster merge collector and angle it up a little more so I can get enough clearance. I was also thinking of getting some of the new Magnaflow cats that look like bullets, they seem to be smaller in diameter.

If your having problems with clearance that is definately the way to go. It didnt cost much, or take alot of time but Im extremely pleased with how it came out. Just make sure you leave some clearance between the cats and the floorboard so you dont get any rattles. And make sure the person doing it can weld pretty good.

I was looking at those cats also, theyre really nice, also pricey. If I have another failure with my current ones Ill probably get those or the randon techs. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

One Kool Cat,

Im going tomorrow so I'll let you know how it went. I think my driver side cat is gone because at WOT, It sounds like its kinda like whistling. I dont know.... Hopefully not.... As I know QTP wont replace it if its a little scraped.

DynoMax powercats are metalic compact and resonably priced for a metalic cat.
Way more durable and better flowing than a cermamic cat.

Well I went to the muffler shop and I only got my CME tips welded together. I wanna play with the Y pipe myself and see if I can get a little more clearance.
