HVAC question

Is it possible to take the AC out of the firewall and still retain the heat(funtionally)?

I believe a big portion of that is the heater box...

It can (has) been done, but a real pain in the ***. The HVAC box has to be removed from the car, the evaporator housing cut off, and a plate fabricated to cover what used to be the evaporator housing. The airflow out of the blower fan must go forward through the firewall, then back inside through the heater core. This will remove some, but not all, of the HVAC box on the engine side of the firewall. Good Luck!
