Default Quick Question about exhaust

I decided to have my muffler cut off and replaced with a custom y-pipe attached to the tips. I was just curious if this would hurt or help the car? It sounds great but I have heard people talk about an engine needing a certain amount of backpressure, not enough and you lose performance, too much (restrictive) and you lose performance. One thing I did notice is that when engine braking sounds good, thoaty, gurgling noise but when I start to get back on the gas it pops a couple times. So in your opinions, do you think I lost or gained performance. I have done, the FRA, and EGR mods and also had my MAF and TB ported. I will be getting a lid shortly. This is of course temporary until I get LT's with cutouts anyways, I like how it sounds was it worth it?

Thank-you very much for the info, you guys are very helpful. One more question... Is the stock Y-pipe real restrictive? It looks like it would be compared to an aftermarket one? How much gain would I get from an aftermarket Y?

Aftermarket y-pipes are a waste of time. They also have less ground clearence. GM put thoes flat spots in there for a reason and thats for clearence reasons. You wont really get any more flow either, even though its flat spots in the factory Y in thoes same flat spots its wider so flow wont be effected.

What you did is fine. The less resistance you have with your exhaust the more power you will make.

Less back preasure is a good thing, some people might think they loose power, but the truth is they gained more on top at the expense of a little bottom.

i know from running an ungodly large y-pipe off the QTPs and being on a pro-kit to avoid noticeable areas of which scrapping is inevitable. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
