Question Anyone run open T.B.?

Mine is a street car but only driven on occassion. I was wondering if there was any benefit from running the throttle body open with only the MAF in front of it(no air filter or intake). I ran it like this for awhile but is this a good idea?

Don't see the point in this, unless you really want to have tons of dirt in your engine.

all i have is the filter in the airlid....when i did the Speed density tune you pretty much delete the maf...so filter in front of the throttle body is basicly what im running

what I'm talking about is having no intake all the way back to the maf.

ohh, . . you mean basically takin off your airlid and runnin with that, right? . . . i misunderstood and somehow thought you mean runnin with your throttle body plate open, . . . . . to answer your question, . . . thats what the filter is for, . . keepin debris and stuff out of your engine, . . . i'd suggest jus runnin with a k&n filter cone, . . it looks stupid and ricer but that's as close as you'll get . .

I don't understand the reasoning (or lack of it) behind your decision. Don't do it!! As large as the LS1 air filters are, they pose no restriction. Even the stock paper ones aren't restrictive. Oh yeah, did I mention, don't do it!!

Put the filter and stuff back on. It is not a really good idea if you ask me.

i wouldn't go that far Gearhead, . . . i've heard of people pickin up a 3-4 horses dynoing without the filter, . . jus airlid, . . without the filter its more flowing but not worth killin your engine for 3 or 4 horses, . . they're restrictive but very minimal

Now you've got me curious. I'd like to bear witness to a dyno run that would prove or disprove that. I was always under the impression that it wasn't a restriction. My sons car showed no improvement at the dragstrip after removing the K&N filter from it's housing. But then again, 3 or 4 HP wouldn't really show up at the strip. (unless your car was extremely consistant)

The intake in any car not only serves to clean the incoming air, but it also helps to straighten the air flow to make it more laminar. Turbulent flow cannot go as fast as laminar efficiently. Running an open MAF will probably not show that much of a gain, and you will be sucking **** into the engine.

with the maf right in front of the TB with nothin in front of it when you get goin fast enough there will be some wind turbulence inside the engine compartment itself that will blow air across the maf and screw up its readings... another downside. just take the filter outa your lid if you really have to.

I had a custom 3.5 inch tube intake wih dual K&N cone filters with speed ensity tune...no maf. FAST 90 mm intake.TB. I dynoed with the open TB and lost about 5 peak hp and a TON under the curve. It was a 415 making about 560 rwhp NA though.

when people pick up HP on the dyno with no filter, they generally have the hood open with a big *** fan blowing into it. running with an open TB on the street would just increase IAT's and be counterproductive of less restriction..
