Hooker LT Problem

Default Hooker LT Problem

I just installed hooker LT's on my 98 Z28 A4 and every thing went great during the installation. But now when I drive I have a noise. I finaly found what it was, it is on the right header where the off road Y-pipe hooks up to it. I guess when my engine torques the joint right there is sliding, pulling apart some and then back together. It hasn't pulled all the way off but thats what I am afraid of. This is keepng me from WOT from a stop. I put some heavier duty clamps on it today but I don't think it helped much. So should I just go get all the joints welded or what do you all think?

How long ago did you do the install. If it wasnt too long ago give it a lil time for the metal to be heat cycled in and it will seal up and get tighter and it might go away, I may be wrong.

It was just this last friday and saturday when I installed them. How many people use the clamps that come with the hooker off road Y-pipe and how many just weld every thing?

I used the band clamps and they work alright. I can see that my y-pipe has slightly moved a little but its nothing big. I don't think you'll wanna weld them unless its a small tack weld.

i know. stop being a little girl and deal with it! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> whats up biotch? the welding you know is a bad idea because we gotta put that damn torque converter in soon. welding it would just **** us off! we need to try and find the clamps that came with our borla. they are pretty heavy duty and shouldnt break under alot of torque. anyhow, we will figure it out later. no worry's dude. later

I ordered 3in Band Clamps from LS1Speed. They are much nicer than the ones that came with the Y pipe. Mine don't leak and hasn't moved in 5 months.

alright I think I know what the problem is. I don't think its the pipe anymore. I had put new clamps on the pipes and I just got under my car to see if the pipes had moved. But they haven't they were in the same place as when befor. But the sound is still there. Now I think its my drive shaft hitting on the pipe in the rear. Because the only time it makes the sound is when the car is moving and I guess when the whole car is torquing. So I'm going to try and get my car up on a lift today and move that damn pipe away from my drive shaft I think that will fix this damn problem. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" />

I think I have the same problem as you. Does it feel like the whole car is shaking when you get on it from a dead stop? If so that is what I have. Took me a while to figure it out. The extension pipe that goes from the drivers side collector to the Y pipe on my car is hitting the heat shield right at the cross brace in front of where the fuel or break lines cross over the exhaust. Check for some rub marks in this general area. That may be your problem as well.
I just need to get under the car and twist that pipe. As soon as it gets back to a reasonalbe temp here in Ohio I will.
