Is it really worth it to get coated headers such as pacesetters? or will i be fine with the black paited version? how many of you pacesetter header owners have coated and how many have black paintbed?

Coated is the way to go. They will last longer. Here is a pic of my Race style Pacesetter LT's from TSP.

yea man, seriously, pacesetters are cheap enough to begin with. you'd be a fool not to get coated. not only do they look better and last longer, they'll keep your engine bay tens of degrees cooler resulting in longer parts life and better performance.

get it right the first time and get coated... you won't want to have to get new headers after your non-coated starts peeling away

Ok, so I am the fool everyone has been looking for. Yes I got the Uncoated but I got them to be a little different. I did it correctly though, I sanded down the crappy black paint that came on them (VERY thin coat that comes on them stock, please people if you buy them uncoated take some time and at least repaint them) I then put 3 coats of VHT black paint/ceramic coating, then heat wrapped them with the black DEI, then used 2 cans of the black DEI silicon spray that keep the moisture from rotting the wrap. SO feel free to tell me i'm an idiot because in the long run I spent just as much as if I woulda bought the coated ones, but I have gotten a ton of compliments and have never seen another set done this way.

I agree with one comment. Do it right the first time! And if i wasn't traveling on vacation now I would take a picture of what my COATED pace setters look like after 2 years on my DD. I have pics of them brand new liKe above. All the coating has flaked off the bottom half of the header . And now they are even starting to rust from the cylinder head flange down where water does not get to. I wish I would have saved up for a better header that would last through future projects. If I get a 408 I am not putting these rusty pipes on.

wow, those look great...i was considering doing this (the right way too) because i hadnt seen anyone else do it and thought it would look great but i never expected it too look that good...black painted for me now...thanks...

I may get flammed for this but if you wanna do it right the first time, get stainless steel headers. If you can't afford it, save up until you can afford them. BTW- Don't coated headers eventually start to flake and rust?

My coated pacesetters on my V6 lasted good through 2 chicago winters. But the bottom of the Y-pipe that's exposed to the road elements is starting to rust. It is coated just like the headers. The LS1 y-pipes for pacesetters are not coated for some reason. Expect those to rust quicker. But the headers themselves should be fine. It shouldn't really matter unless you're showing off the bottom of your y-pipe.

I'm also going to be buying coated pacesetters for my LS1.

Thanks wolfy, it was my first time working with heatwrap and it wasn't all that difficult, it's a big mess though my arms were covered in black fibers from the wrap and I was itching head to toe but the results were worth it in my opinion.

ok, well I am about to buy some headers...

I thought that coated would keep them from rusting and cracking... but from what i see it doesnt...right?

is stainless the only way to go then?

Coating stops the rust for a pretty good while. Mine look brand new from under the hood, you have to crawl under the car to see them turning a bit orange.

The painted ones are going to go to hell much faster.

Get the coated. I have the painted and I'd be lying if I said the rust
didn't bother me.
