Default removing coil packs..

what steps and precautions do I need to take to remove my coil packs? Im putting some MAC's on sunday and I heard that the passenger side will slide right in from the top if you take off the coil packs and valve cover.

Its more like, you can muscle it in! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

As for the coil packs, just unbolt it from the valve cover and unplug the harness. This is much easier said than done! The rear coil pack bolt is a BITCH! <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" />

...but its not that bad! <img border="0" alt="[angel]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_angel.gif" />

I would reccomend getting someone to help you. It will get a little boring and a friend can get you tools when you need them etc.

Actually both sides of mine fit right in with no problems at all from the top. Just take the valve covers off along with the coilpacks..

Hint on passenger rear use a 1/4 drive rachet with a deep-well socket.. and get in the motor compartment(right knee on the intake and left knee on radiator) it is not so bad that way.. pretty easy. Did mine in 3 1/2 hours.

thanks redrumss! I'll be sure to right that down before I meet up with my friends to do it. We have access to Ft. Meade here in MD, they have a auto hobby shop that has 20 bays with lifts and impact guns and lots n lots of tools, and I have about 3 other people comin in to help me. sounds pretty easy from the research ive done. can anyone tell me if you had to make any changes to your I-pipe to get the mac ypipe to fit? my buddy is bringing a sawzall just in case.

I just removed the rear coil bolt in preparation for my MAC install... What a PITA!!! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="gr_images/icons/mad.gif" />

I just saved an hour off my install time <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

That bolt is someone in my neighbor's yard now in a pile of snow!!! I never want to see it again.

My hands are pretty skinny, and I still had a hard time getting that bolt out. God help you if you have fat hands!!!

Do yourself a huge favor and get a set of ratcheting wrenches. They will make the job a lot easier, especially that last bolt on the passenger coil pack. If your lucky the craft shop will have a set you can use.
Also, as stated above, when you get the last bolt off the passenger coil pack throw it as far as you can. Then call it a dirty name. It's procedure. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_images/icons/tongue.gif" />

I tried for hours to get my rear coil pack bolt off when doing my plugs and wasnt able to get it.
I was even to the point of just trying to break the bolt by pulling up on the coil pack frame.
Oh well..one day it will have to come off. I will make sure i have a ratcheting wrench next time.

The '98's, I think, attach each coil separately to the valve cover. The '99+ have a coil pack rail that the coils attach to then the whole rail attaches to the valve cover. This is the issue.

Default Re: removing coil packs..

well we finally got the headers on. It took us from 9am to 330pm. Most of that time was spent trying to get my stock ypipe out of my I-pipe. My exhaust guy clamped it so tight that the U-clamp bent the ypipe inside the ipipe and it wouldnt come out, we hacked it up pretty bad. Now I'm having code issues, check my "problems after header install" thread
